Noosard, they lost what was considered an unlosable election. They went solidly backward in my electorate against a dud coalition candidate. Abbott actually lost his seat, the liberals were that unpopular, but Labor's tax policies were so on the nose, they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. In the polling places covered by my branch, it went from Red to blue with a swing against labor of 3.1%. Robertson is a bellwether seat that has only be held by the winning party for the past 40 odd years, had Robertson been won by Labor, they would have won government.

Have a look at the comparative voting patterns for Robertson before making a fool of yourself. It appears as if ignorance of facts seems no impediment for you having a dig.

In 1955 I caught the tram from Little Bay to Circular Quay, the ferry terminal in Sydney's CBD. This 7 year old wandered around the streets and I went to Bennalong Point which was a massive, rusty iron shed where Sydney's trams went to sleep at night. It struck me how ugly the sheds were, but perched on a magical point on Sydney Harbour. A decade later the trams were gone and the amazing Sydney Opera House took shape on that same site.

I got back home from my little adventure late in the day. it had cost me a penny each way. My parents were distraught, the police were looking for me, but I wondered what the fuss was about, I was just a little kid that had gone exploring with sixpence in my pocket for tram fares and a threepenny packet of chips for lunch shared between me and the seagulls at the Quay.

ON THIS DAY – 20th April
1839 – George Grey's second expedition to the northwest was saved by friendly Aboriginals. After discovering the Gascoyne River, the longest in Western Australia, Grey's party had continued southwards in two whaleboats, however, the boats were wrecked in the pounding surf near today's Geraldton, necessitating an arduous journey on foot. Leaving weaker members of the party behind to be rescued later, Grey took five of his men and set off to make a final dash for Perth. They finished all their provisions in four days, and for the next three days, travelled without food or water. They were sustained briefly by a pool of liquid mud until, on 20 April 1839, friendly Aborigines found the party and gave them enough food to regain their strength to continue the journey.

1870 – A second state flag of New South Wales was adopted, similar to the current flag of Victoria with a crown above the Southern Cross.

1908 – Forty-four people were killed and 400 injured after two trains collide at the Sunshine railway station, the junction of the Ballarat and Bendigo railway lines.

1908 – The first New South Wales Rugby League premiership began in Sydney. The first NSW rugby league game was played at Birchgrove Oval with South Sydney defeated North Sydney 11-7.

1919 – Richard Hillary, future Royal Air Force pilot and author of the autobiographical The Last Enemy, was born in Sydney, New South Wales.

1920 – Australia competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, winning one bronze and two silver medals. It was the first time Australia competed at the Olympics separately from New Zealand – the two nations had previously competed as a combined Australasia team.

1937 – Regular airmail services began between Australia and the USA.

1985 – The Duke of Kent officially opened the Queensland Performing Arts Complex at a gala Royal Festival Performance.

1954 – In the Petrov Affair, Evdokia Petrova sought political asylum after the plane carrying her back to the Soviet Union lands at Darwin, with her escorts disarmed by Commonwealth police.

Just how much the game (AFL) has changed.

Two absolute champions.

But Farmer (191cm) vs Nicholls (189cm) would not rate (height-wise) as ruckmen today, and would barely be there as midfielders.

Patrick Cripps 194, Nat Fyfe 190, Marcus Bontempelli 192 ........

Unfortunately, some would say, they have always been empty on the return leg back to the long white cloud land.
