On topic, a British columnist puts the British Tories under the microscope:
This government should be on the rack. The evidence that it botched crucial decisions at crucial moments is piling up. The litany is now so familiar it barely needs repeating, from the failure to secure personal protective equipment for frontline workers in health and social care to the 11 lost days of delay before imposing a lockdown that has proved essential for saving lives.

You can focus on specific judgments: why did ministers allow mass gatherings, from racing at Cheltenham to a Stereophonics gig in Cardiff, ignoring the warnings that such events would be a virus-fest? Why did it initially tell people to stay away from pubs and restaurants, but simultaneously allow those places to stay open? Why did the government call a halt in March to testing and tracing? If the answer is a lack of capacity, then why did it not immediately set about recruiting the “army of contact tracers” that will be required if we are ever to emerge from our homes? Why the focus on mega-labs, rather than seizing on the offer of small laboratories to do testing for their local hospitals, which, as Paul Nurse, director of the Francis Crick Institute, has argued, could have made those hospitals “safe places”? Why the rules initially limiting tests to those NHS employees with symptoms, which, as Nurse puts it, allowed staff to be on wards “infecting people”?

Or you can look at decisions going back a decade, pointing a finger at Tory austerity that starved public services to the bone, leaving them underequipped and eroding our resilience. Either way, the country now faces a death toll approaching 30,000.

The Tories are fortunate Trump is making such a cock up. It makes them look good. I suspect Covid 19 will end up killing 100,000 Brits. The official number will, of course, be less.
We have to blame China for our piss poor performance government.

No glee at any deaths at all. I'd prefer to see the UK matching South Korea and to be posting that the UK government is awesome.

Thanks for posting the link statts. The documentary makes the British government look like a liar (and also grossly incompetent). In due course there needs to be a criminal investigation to see if criminal charges can be brought against anyone for having the NHS so grossly ill-equipped to fight an all too expected pandemic. Over 100 NHS staff will lose their lives because of this grossly incompetent cock up.

What's the point of having pandemic plans if a country can't make a half decent crack at carrying out its plan? Perhaps some western governments just don't care enough about their people or the people in high office have reached positions well beyond their competencies. The South Korean and Taiwanese governments seem to take the health of their residents extremely seriously and to have competent people in key positions.

I suppose in a week or two we'll be getting reports of Covid 19 spreading among those who've attended the protests in the US. A firearm collection isn't going to keep the virus away.

Johnson gets blasted from many quarters yet again:
While Rai Uno, the Italian state broadcaster’s flagship channel, gave prominent play to the news that Britain had recorded “more than 32,000 deaths, the highest total in Europe exceeding even Italy”, the Corriere della Serra daily went a good way further.

The situation in the UK was “like a nightmare from which you cannot awake, but in which you landed because of your own fault or stupidity”, the influential liberal-conservative paper said, adding that Britain seemed “a prisoner of itself”.

The country that was “the most reluctant in Europe to impose a lockdown has become the most cautious to start reopening”, with public opinion frightened of the consequences and Boris Johnson eager to avoid breaking Italy’s “sad record”.

Domestically he's benefitting from the tendency for a nation to rally together in the face of adversity and comparisons with Trump's appalling mismanagement in the US.

^ Sounds all a bit sour grapes from the Italians. Must be tough being ---- at something sh!tty and losing the Covid-19 basket case gold medal after all.

How secure is the Italian PM's position as they look back on their own exemplary performance?

Almost every leader who’s doing even a half reasonable job Has gained massively domestically. Just look a Angela Merkel who is about 80% approval The Orange is the only one that I know of who has dropped and is dropping.

It’s a clear demonstration that the Orange is not capable of leading to success but good at failure.

The only way he can be nominally successful is if the country is being successful without him and he doesn’t interfere much, then he does the only thing he is good at, claiming others success as his.

Encouraging news from the U.K. the death rate is dropping on the 7 day rolling average
07AF70C4-4E74-469C-8C25-B679104259EC.jpeg
The case numbers are not dropping almost certainly due to increased testing

The USA is not doing well neither case numbers nor death rate there is little chance that increasing numbers of tests are the cause

On current performance the Orange looks to be allowing the numbers of dead Americans to double by about this time next month. The numbers are historically correct to today and you can see the rolling 7 day average is virtually a straight line.

I sincerely hope the projection is wrong, unfortunately it may be a conservative estimate.

He seems to totally disregard everything that makes good sense.

World death numbers are clearly dropping on the 7 day trend

Unfortunately, the US not so much, and the % trend is worrying

According one of Sweden’s leading epidemiologists, Professor Johan Giesecke, Sweden is close to achieving natural herd immunity.

=D>
This was from April 21, 17 days ago.

There are only 3 countries that believe in herd immunity, or where the leaders have declared COVID a non event. Sweden, Belarus and Brazil.

Since that date, Sweden with a population of just 10M has had 9553 infections and 1401 deaths. Hardly a glowing endorsement for herd immunity. The trend on both infections and deaths is accelerating.

Belarus also around 10M where the Luchenko declared that COVID was a Psychosis is averaging 867 infections a day so far for May, but claiming (almost certainly false), 28 deaths for May

Brazil with 212M people, where their head honcho does not believe in the pandemic, has had 47,000 infections so far in May and has had 3070 deaths in the first 7 days of May.

The evidence is pointing to lockdown as a clear winner over herd immunity, despite RL Trader spruking the HI approach. Despite this, Sweden is sticking to its guns and show no sign of dropping the HI strategy.

Sorry the data doesn’t support you about Sweden, look at the 7 day rolling average.

It seems to be working in Sweden not in Belarus and absolutely not in Brazil
