World-leading disease data analysts have projected that the UK will become the country worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic in Europe, accounting for more than 40% of total deaths across the continent.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in Seattle predicts 66,000 UK deaths from Covid-19 by August, with a peak of nearly 3,000 a day, based on a steep climb in daily deaths early in the outbreak.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... y-predicts

Neil Ferguson, of Imperial College London, thinks the figures are wrong. Let's hope so. Nevertheless something seems to have gone wrong at the science - politics interface in the UK. This didn't happen in some other first world countries.

No doubt once we have all been through the current crisis there will be in depth investigations to determine what might be done better. That will involve considering what happened in other countries that got through the pandemic better.
I’m inclined to believe the IHME is very badly wrong in its projection. Given the current figure of 91 per million (U.K.) Spain at 300 per million and that the IHME number is 1,000 per million.

The U.K. will be badly hit no doubt but may not even reach the percentages of others in Europe far less exceed by that much.

With all the worldwide travel restrictions it's interesting to note the amount of air traffic still going on https://www.flightradar24.com
US and China looks like business as usual.

There was a health professional being interviewed on Fox News two days ago who did mention the absurdity of lock-down while airplanes full of asymptomatic people fly unchecked from cluster city to cluster city. However, the blonde-of-the-day holding the interview didn't see the relevance and moved on to talk up America's 'best in the world' claim to something in healthcare.

Regarding US and China, guess where all the masks are coming from/going to?

Interesting documentary from few years ago about Spanish Flu (1918). If you dont fancy watching the interviews & historical content from 50/100 or so years ago, just watching from about 44 mins and seeing what Dr Fauci had to say back then about being ready and acting quickly (as well as washing hands for 20 secs with soap) makes it worth watching for 10 mins

How many of those are general aviation (not big commercial jets)? how many are cargo? How many are empty to maintain pilots flight certification?
U.S. is a fraction if the normal numbers, though general aviation has jumped quite a lot

FlightRadar24 (FR24) has added a section to its website to cover Covid-19.

This section includes a number of articles which have various presentations of the global impact of Covid-19 on aviation:
FR24 does have analyses that separately cover the total number of flights (excludes aircraft that are not ADS-B enabled) and the total number of commercial flights however these appear to be restricted to FR24 members.

President Obama spoke (on 2nd December 2014) to the National Institutes of Health about the U.S. response to the Ebola virus.

This has particular relevance to where we are today because of a very specific warning in the speech.

In the speech President Obama gave a clear warning about the danger of an airborne disease in the future and the importance of having the infrastructure in place “that allows us to see it quickly, isolate it quickly, respond to it quickly”.

The relevant extract from the speech starts at 15:04

For those who are interested, the video and its transcript can be found on the C-SPAN website here:

Are you talking about the
The Global Health Security and Biodefense unit — responsible for pandemic preparedness — was established in 2015 by Barack Obama’s National Security Advisor, Susan Rice ( here ). The unit resided under the National Security Council (NSC) — a forum of White House personnel that advises the president on national security and foreign policy matters.
That was then
In May 2018, the team was disbanded and its head Timothy Ziemer, top White House official in the NSC for leading U.S. response against a pandemic, left the Trump administration

Some countries were very prepared for this pandemic. E.g. Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea. Some others might not have been so well prepared but took it seriously and responded early and well.
