The all-new "Getting BREXIT Done" thread.

Post by tamada » December 15, 2019, 12:48 pm

Macron unt Merkel are already getting all bum twitchy then...

EU warns of post-Brexit rival Britain after Johnson win

"German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that Britain would be an economic "competitor at our door" after it leaves the EU and French President Emmanuel Macron saw a threat that London would become an "unfair competitor".

This reflects concern that Britain could become a kind of "Singapore on Thames", a trading hub where multinationals can gain access to the EU's huge market without playing by its rules"

https://www.afp.com/en/news/3954/eu-war ... oc-1n199u8

'Singapore-on-Thames'... LOL. Not with that sprawling dump called Heathrow it aint!

What gets me is this sudden very public about face. Before, when May was pitching what is ultimately the same, watery deal as Johnson's, the EU were unified in projecting the 'your loss' and 'loser UK' and 'back of the bus' mantra. That simply emboldened the Remainers to make much mischief. Maybe, in a more Trumpian world, that could be taken as EU interference in and exacerbation of the UK's total mismanagement of the Leave agenda.

Anyway, we have yet to hear from two prominent protagonists of Remain. One is the ever lovely Gina Miller and the other is that Belgian motormouth Guy Verhofstadt.

Making Great Britain great!

...despite Bojo.

Thanks for that but in all reality, the wheels have well and truly come off her wagon..

...unless Johnson fails to deliver on his overly-optimistic deal-making deadline and subsequently throws all the toys (and some MP's) out of the pram (again) and the specter of a hard Brexit re-emerges.

Hard Brexit, Soft Brexit... These terms only surfaced after the 2016 referendum. Essentially all of US who actually did know what we were voting for, was OUT completely OUT . Look at the panicking in Brussels. As I said before and say again the EU needs UK more than UK needs EU with all its waste , corruption and red tape.

Agreed. Furthermore, every time that the term 'hard Brexit' is allowed to pollute the ongoing dialog and negotiations, the more straws the hapless Remainers will have to clutch at.

Three and half years is enough already!

This time last year, they were predicting that Brexit would see India surpass the UK as world's 5th largest economy by GDP with the UK probably slipping to 7th place. Of course that was after 2-and-half years of 'dithering'. So I went looking for the UK's historical global GDP ranking to see how far they have actually fallen. From the appended video timeline, it appears that being an EU member has done absolutely bugger all for the UK.

But we knew this already.

Well done Tam. That shows just how strong (In relative terms) the UK has been over the years Please just note how we lost the way in the late 60's and 70's when the big fight with the communist Trade Unions was going on. =D> =D> =D>

I posted the following in the Election thread earlier but since that is done and dusted, adding it here to keep the traction of Brexit debate going.

---

Reading on how Johnson is planning to enshrine his 11-month, 'no dithering' EU trade deal-making edict in law, I can already hear the natives over in the ever lovely Gina Miller's camp getting restless.

The erstwhile, undercover Remainers and the EU both claim that the Conservative's stated intent to get a deal done quickly is quite impossible. But beyond the will to deliver, consider what else is needed to make such a comprehensive, win-win deal. Bureaucrats, pencil necks, paper shufflers, translators, lawyers of various flavors, trade experts, academics, business and industry mandarins and a whole lot of coffee.

It is a lot of work but between the UK and the EU, there are pretty much infinite resources in all these areas of expertise and plenty places for them to meet. Rather than wringing their hands and suggesting it's all too hard, start identifying and hiring the specialists required to support this very necessary exercise in ensuring mutually agreed international trade and prosperity.

And that goes for you as well Boris!

The estimates published on Monday had been due to be released before last week’s election but were blocked by Britain’s top government official

Last paragraph says it all.

"The estimates published on Monday had been due to be released before last week’s election but were blocked by Britain’s top government official, who feared publication might breach civil service impartiality rules."

So if they'd been released, this blatant Tory number fudging may have reduced the Labour and the Lib Dem vote losses? The scandal may even have secured #10 for Jeremy? Labour's numbers were so totally unrealistic and left field, nobody would have batted an eye at the Conservatives playing fast and loose again with the books (again).

Austerity ain't gonna be over no matter how many times Johnson says it will. He's already promised millions to the "borrowed" voters in the north and northwest so despite no longer having to give bungs to the DUP, he doesn't have a lot to get Sturgeon to STFU.

Is the island known Great Britain really big enough - in the geographical sense - to warrant having a "north" and a "northwest"? :-k

It's not quite Little Britain (yet).

If the BBC has 40 local radio stations for England alone (and only one each for the other bits of the Union) it must be bloody huge, no?

I mean Shropshire, Stoke and Derby have each get their own and they're only about 45 minutes away from each other?

Not much news about or remarks from UM posters of what the new conservative way forward will provide GB in a positive light.
End of the week it will finally be done and that long ago democratic vote will finally be implemented.
Must be some extremely happy people organizing parties.
Has Boris stated a path forward?

The Tories list of deliverables was published in their manifesto and broadcast far and wide on all the mainstream media channels as well as the not-so mainstream ones. Did you miss that?

Today is the final full day of Britains EU membership ,, 1pm UK time , 12 Midnight Brussels and 6am Saturday morning in Udonthani .. finally after so much ranker and political shennanigans Brexit will be done . and Britain and the British people can move on as a sovereign nation , Im hoping for a surge in not only the pound but the business world and patriotism.

Democracy and the will of the people won over and Boris deserves credit ..but the British people from North to South need to make sire to hold his feet to the fire and make sure he keeps his promises not only on brexit borders fishing laws etc but hospitals schools and policing etc.

LETS MAKE BRITAIN GREAT AGAIN . STARTING TOMORROW. ive got a feeling the UK will prosper and other nations will leave the EU in the coming months n years .

As for the remainers .. its time to stop all the BS and work to make brexit a success or buggar off to live in an EU country.

DM will be raising a glass of the finest Chang beer sometime over the next few hours to toast Britain , the Queen and our great nation.

RULE BRITAINIA

Agree , and I certainly hope and EXPECT Boris makes good on his pledges.
At 5.55am tomorrow, I will be sitting, drink in hand, watching the events live in London
If the remainers had not tried to STOP Brexit happening with all their shenanigans, then they could have secured a soft deal. The inevitable hard deal is entirely down to them.
I endorse your closing, yes R. B.
