If you're going to San Francisco
If you're going to San Francisco
Don't worry about wearing flower's in your hair, just make sure you are Black.
I never thought I would ever agree with the nutter, Lauren Boebert (even if she got some facts wrong) that a proposal is more than a tad crazy. A bill has been drafted to give every eligible Black person $5M as reparation for being impacted from slavery, and some Black activists claim $5M is not enough. Boebert was wrong when she claimed there was no slavery in California, but $5M as reparations seem loopy to me. Not sure how 'eligible' is defined, but really, slavery was abolished in the 1860's, nobody who was a slave still lives, and quite a few generations from then.
Black people do suffer a number of inequities today, but slavery is not one of them.

I had a bumper sticker in Texas that read 'Beam me up Scotty'. I often wish I could find one in Udon Thani

Was talking about San Francisco doodoo, thought that was as obvious to most posters, my bad. If you look really, really carefully you will see this is on the US politics thread, not the Saudi politics page.Doodoo wrote: ↑March 17, 2023, 12:27 pmSlavery in the world still exists.

This was pointed at the readership and not your posting about San Francisco

Re: If you're going to San Francisco
I went to San Francisco back in 1971 or so. I got off the Greyhound after a three and a half day ride from Toronto just in time to see a policeman club a wino into a stack of lockers. My next stop turned out to be a pleasant one at a topless restaurant. Nevertheless, that was enough of 'Frisco for me, and I took the next bus to Oregon.
Yes, the proposal is ridiculous and yes, slavery still exists in the world today.

Yes, well, I was very confused after witnessing the beating, the 85 hours on the bus, and experiencing a topless restaurant for the first time. I should have worn some flowers in my hair and met some gentle people there.stattointhailand wrote: ↑March 17, 2023, 1:51 pmThought you were gonna say it rained so ya got wet in the topless restaurant ........ (there are very few restaurants that dont benefit from having a ceiling and attached aircon units)

OOOOh I think I feel a strange vibration, all across the nation
Re: If you're going to San Francisco
Although slavery did exist in California, it mainly affected indigenous people. Some black slaves were imported during the gold rush, but it was never legal. Of course black people were discriminated against, but were never legally slaves there. Perhaps indigenous people should get compensation?

I agree that Doodoo made a valid point.Earnest wrote: ↑March 17, 2023, 3:15 pmDooDoo's response is relevant in response to the last line of your post. Your sweeping assertion that Black people do not suffer from enslavement in the 21st century is baseless - where's your justification for such a claim?
Your thread title bears no relation to your gripe other than a geographical location, maybe using 'slavery reparations' in the header could give us an indication of your thread's intent?

Far be it that members should be obliged to interpret what other posters had in mind when making loose statements.
Re: If you're going to San Francisco
Reparation for slavery?? My ancestors died in the Civil War freeing the slaves. What kind of reparation do I get?
Re: If you're going to San Francisco
Totally agree. Yes, there was slavery. Yes, it was wrong. But this is just another instance of Presentism, measuring and evaluating historical events by current standards.Whistler wrote: ↑March 17, 2023, 12:03 pmI never thought I would ever agree with the nutter, Lauren Boebert (even if she got some facts wrong) that a proposal is more than a tad crazy. Presentism a good word to describe such circumstances. We share that view.
