Boring U.S. politics
Boring U.S. politics
The Democrats have the trifecta and yet there's no drama.
They're talking about boring stuff like a $15 minimum wage instead of interesting stuff like whether Meghan Markel-Windsor's baby might be too brown for the Royal family. The Donald would have an opinion on that and it would be far more entertaining.
Maybe sleepy Joe could make Hunter a US trade envoy to liven things up?

Re: Boring U.S. politics
It took two months to liven things up.....but the first Biden family member has been ousted from the White House

Not quite on the same par as Stormy Daniels or the Royal family......but it's a start. I no longer go to bed wondering what sort of salacious headline I'm going to wake up to after 4 years.

Re: Boring U.S. politics
I just watched Fox News doing a quick review of the pandemic in the US, from the Health Secretary Azar announcing a public health emergency in January 2020 to the current, quite impressive vaccination tally. They covered business failures, markets falling, schools closing, rising unemployment... all the things that President Trump pretty much denied as ever happening. In fact 45 only featured in two rather benign, short video clips, one signing an EO and the other wearing a mask as he headed for Marine One. It was all quite surreal.
Re: Boring U.S. politics
I couldn't find Fox (or CNN or BBC) on my recent travels so no idea how boring the Republicans inability to mutually agree on who should be Speaker of the House yet. And some thought the Tories internal elections in the UK were a bit of a circus.

Re: Boring U.S. politics
With Trump telling his loony acolytes to stop faffing about and vote for McArthy, it's more bizarre than anything else.

The Speaker vote - someone was on Twatter last night wondering why she'd want to vote for a party that had no intention of governing.

Due to the vacancy of the office of the Speaker of the House as of January 4, 2023, Murray is currently second in the line of succession to the presidency after Vice President Kamala Harris.

Treasury secretary says US to hit debt limit Jan. 19.
US debt limit, that's got to be an oxymoron.

Re: Boring U.S. politics
Maybe somebody with greater knowledge can update me on the tangled US debt 'management' process.
When I lived in the US during the Reagan era, part of the disastrous Reaganomics measures was a band-aid on the soaring US debt. From memory, a law was introduced by a couple of Texas GOP politicians to curb the deficit. It was announced by Reagan in the Rose Garden, but some politicians refused to attend the announcement as they knew it was a sham.
The law stated, that the budget should constrain debt growth by setting a limit between government revenue and government expenditure, but only on 'projected' figures, In reality, spending increased massively, so they simply 'projected' much higher government income at a time when income was dropping a lot due to massive tax cuts. Top marginal rates went from 73% to 28% to high income earners. Some other taxes were increased, however, the deregulation of the banking sectors was an absolute disaster. Defence spending increased by about 40% so the sham process never worked and the deficit blew out.
Is this framing of the budget still working on the same flawed principles?

Re: Boring U.S. politics
I do not think American Politics is boring, i thoroughly enjoy the cut and thrust of the well researched and reasoned debates, The personalities shine through the doom and gloom and champions rise to the fore to make excellent pointed responses and this shows the American Public , how these well intentioned, intelligent and protectors of the American Constitution. It is therefore these men and women who are working hard for the benefit of the public .
