A 42 year old mother died last night after being hit by a passing train a crossing in Nong Khon Kwang. Her 7 year old son was injured. The crossing does not have a barrier. Since the beginning of 2558 (2015), 5 people in Udon have lost their lives in accidents involving trains. Two people have lost their lives at this particular crossing.

I seem to recall news quite a while back that the government was going to fix the problem of railroad crossings with no barriers.......I guess Udon hasn't figured into that budget.

If i am not mistaken this is an illegal crossing that the station has been trying to shut down.. they planted railroad ties to stop vehicules from using it, but motorbikes still come across. It s located at the end of thestation s platform.
RIP and best of luck to her son.

I notice in the Thairath article, the area between Ban Dong Keng (บ้านดงเค็ง) and Ban Nong Waeng (หนองแวง) is identified as where several accidents have occurred.

My wife tells me villagers in that area have fervently fought to PREVENT a rail warning/crossguard because it would cause them to make a long journey around. Thai logic. It really makes you scratch your head sometimes.
Every day I wake up is a good day.

Not as if train can sneak up on you
Like all intersections should look both ways
Oh I forgot, this is Thailand

there are two railway crossings going into Ban Nong Khon kwang. One is on a fully paved road which has some horrendous speed bumps to make people aware of the train tracks. A guard crossing gate is being built there right now.. The other crossing is on a minor road that goes through a Wat then turns to dirt, then over a clearly marked (with a stop sign and railway warning signs) paved railway crossing.. The problem is not that the crossing are "unguarded", the problem is total inattention to the point where people don't see or hear a diesel train going perhaps 50kph just a few dozen meters from their car.

According to the piece at https://www.facebook.com/udon.today.news........There are 58 points that cross the rail tracks in Udon. 15 have barriers and another 7 points have barriers under construction.

I won't argue the point that there are too many railway crossings with no barriers, but numerous signs, stop signs and speed bumps should assist make driver's aware of the danger.. Those absolutely unofficial crossings should be blocked with concrete jersey barriers, not that that would stop folks on motorcycles.

Here's more sobering news (an extract) from an article in the Thai news today:
Since 2552 (2009) there have been 7 accidents involving trains/vehicles in Udon province.....14 people have died and 5 have been injured. Egads!

Spare no expense!
This sign warns drivers that the railroad barriers are not yet in operation. I'm not sure of the exact location, although it is in Udon.
