Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
Easy answer go the other way on Ring Road turn left at Nom Som Rong right before the golf course back to Nong Khai Hwy. Longer but not frustrating
Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
Construction Work full wing NOW JAM Time. It will get worse for sure, coming back from Nong Khai took 40 mins to get through that intersection. I will do as a friends did on my next trip, left turn(East to Sakon Nakhon), first U turn back to Hwy 2(time 10mins)

From memory of the KK tunnel and the more recent Pattaya underpass, these early stages when a lot of topside space is being used for preparing stuff, the amount of open traffic lanes will vary quite unpredictably. Once the main excavation commences (next year?), the accessible lanes should stabilize as they try and keep construction stuff inside as small a space as practical. Regardless, I reckon there will only be at most 2-lanes available including slip roads nearer the intersection so working out impromptu detours and get-arounds will be part of most people's commute around the area.

Is it time yet to have a sweepstake on when the first time the open lanes collapse either from excess use or someone digging too close to the foundations

Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
Anybody figured out the traffic flows at the roadworks yet/
Yesterday left home 16:10 got through to the other side of the ringroad at 16:38 arrived school at 1642 with 3 mins to spare...
Today left home 16:10 got through to the other side of the ringroad at 16:13 arrived school at 16:18 and had nearly half an hour to wait for school to finish
Never ever even close to the same amount of traffic each day so how can you ever plan anything?

It depends on the works being done, last Saturday the PEA was erecting poles, the road was down to one lane, what do you expect??? They are way behind in all the works in Phuket so Udon wont be any different, do you really expect anything different, how long have you lived here, or are you just stupid?

Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
There was no visible difference to the work being done yesterday afternoon or this afternoon certainly no extra lanes being taken out or reinstated. Yesterday I was at a standstill 100 m north of the U turn and today I didn't even touch my brakes until about 50 m from the ringroad. Didn't use the road on Saturday so have no idea what was being done, was only comparing 2 consecutive days at exactly the same time where the first took 28 mins and the next it takes 3 mins.
Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
drove from the Tesco side heading east so had to go north on Rte 2 to the U-Turn.. It is protected somewhat but one person decided that they weren't going to complete the U-Turn into the passing lane and then merge left but try to cut across the entire 3 lanes of traffic.. That held us up for 10 minutes until the mental midget finally decided that they would execute the U-Turn properly. Then as mentioned earlier in the string the traffic closer to the intersection was funneled down to one lane due to construction along the side of the road. Now we won't even ask why someone in authority didn't put out cones 500 meters down the road to merge everyone into one lane to keep the traffic moving smoothly... But, having only been through the mess a few times in the last couple of months (I avoid it) I must say the protected U-Turns work OK for the most part and traffic moves better than I would have imagined.

There is a general lack of large scale signage anywhere at this roadworks. I know where I am going, I avoid coming in to town as much as possible, but needs must sometimes. Generally speaking I am getting straight through, only once did I find any excessive delay, and that was at the same level of delay as before the works started. They need to make lane changing banned within a certain distance in all directions, but obviously first we need appropriate signage, and then enforcement.

Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
It's much better now without the traffic lights and drivers wanting to cut across lanes. Still a few pushy drivers, but regulars know to get in the correct lanes. But it's obvious that some don't know how to negotiate the junction and the absence of EARLY signs indicating where the u-turns are doesn't help.
Mid-afternoon Fridays usually means delays as, I guess, people pack up early for the weekend?
What's going on quite a way up from the main construction, coming down from Nong Khai. The road blocked sometimes(I think they remove the barriers at the busy times) and traffic required to swing right and back again. Preparation for a pedestrian bridge over the road?

Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
If it's a pedestrian footbridge, I would have thought it would be about 300m South of the railway for the kids to and from the school and access to Nong Samrong /Ban Don Wai roads for those getting on/off buses. Can't think why anyone would want to cross the road further back as there's nothing there
Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
My bet is its for a drainage culvert, they are piling across the road, pockets already cut in the road for pile locations, they will probably do the otherside of the road when that side is completed, definitely not a foot bridge though.

Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy
We had an opportunity to drive all four directions at the intersection-in-question today. I wish I could have taken photos.....but had to keep an eye on the road. A few observations:
The businesses on a good 0.5km of each side (total of about 4km) appear to be severely affected by the construction.......many closed and the rest probably doing little business. To make matters worse, the city is installing major drainage/wastewater piping that butts right up against most of those businesses. It's a mess now.....and rainy season is just around the bend. There are some pretty ugly looking electric/internet/phone bundles/boxes hanging along the ground in mud near the intersection.
Coming from the Nongsamrong/Tesco intersection, we had to turn left and u-turn to cross the intersection (toward Toolpro).....but traffic moved along slowly but steadily. I wouldn't want to travel that area on a regular basis, but one in a blue moon is ok. Coming from Nongsamrong toward Tesco, there's a turn around lane just past the BMW dealership that allows you to avoid the construction area altogether........if you're going to Tesco.
Early on in the construction process it seemed like all the workers were wearing hard hats and safety gear. That wasn't the case today.....a few workers trudging through mud in bare feet and a pair of workers on a pile driver slinging taut cables and working the machine were in flip flops and no gloves. I wonder if Italthai is still in charge of the project (the CEO's been in the news of late)
If I consulted my fortune teller today, I'd guess he'd predict the project won't be completed on time.

Got to agree Parrot .. im back in Udon for a few days and this lunchtime had the pleasure of encountering the area you mention .. it can only be described as a war zone with the heavy unseasonal rain large areas are flooded bomb craters, workers are knee deep in sludge n mud , little or no progress and if this project is completed on time i will walk a full lap of the ring road stark bollock naked except for my SUFC cap.

The fun has been finding alternate routes. I can now go from my house on the Nong Khai highway to the Tap and never encounter a stop light or traffic jam
