Women MPs help campaign for Thai Rak Thai candidate

YUTHAPONG KAMNODNAE

Udon Thani _ Fourteen women MPs from Thai Rak Thai turned up yesterday to help campaign for party candidate Thirada Sanitwongchai in the lead-up to Sunday's by-election in constituency 2.

The seat was left vacant by the death of TRT's Atthapol Sanitwongchai, who fell to his death from a Bangkok condominium last month in suspicious circumstances.

The women MPs, led by list MP Laddawal Wongsriwong and Bangkok MP Sansanee Nakpong, joined forces with television personality and Bangkok MP Yuranan Pamornmontri, and deputy government spokesman Danupong Poonakan, who is also an actor.

They went out in a large convoy to visit various communities in tambon Chiang Yuen and Chiang Phin in Muang district, taking turns to speak in support of Ms Thirada, the elder sister of the late MP.

Mrs Laddawal said Ms Thirada's election would increase the number of women in parliament and help the fight for social justice.

Udon Thani already has one female MP, Rospimol Jiramethakorn.

On Wednesday, opposition leader Abhishit Vejjajiva led a team of opposition MPs in a major campaign rally in Muang district in support of Ong-art Wiset of Mahachon party.

There are only two candidates for the seat.

Mr Ong-art yesterday filed a complaint with Therdpong Sareetho, chairman of constituency 2's election committee, against Ms Thirada.

The complaint, which included six pictures and a VCD, accused the Thai Rak Thai candidate of violating the election law by putting the letters MP in front of her name, implying to voters that she was or had been elected member of parliament.

Maj-Gen Sanan Kachornprasart, the Mahachon leader, yesterday checked out the election centre to see how ready it was.

The Election Commission's department of election campaigning and information dissemination and the provincial election committee yesterday set up a centre at the town hall, from where 30 student from Udon Thani Rajabhat University made telephone calls to constituents urging them to exercise their voting right on Sunday.
