With the start of the school term pushed to July 1st , are kids taking advantage of this free-time to
hone their skills ? There's an endless array of STEM courses /tutorials online . Any favorite recommendations from the gallery ? Recently , I've
been rather shocked at 18-20 year old delivery boys who get flustered at basic maths with printed receipt right in front of them? This is a
global condition , people have strengths and weak
areas the world over. so , let's not make it racial.

Im guessing a large percentage (not all) of kids who should have started back at school mid May now postponed to July 1st wont be using the 6 week extra holiday period to prepare or study .. those who are not on at school via the internet or pushed by parents daily will IMO just be tossing it off , playing games , hanging out etc etc.

Ref Mathematics .. see it all the time , a basic very poor level of low level maths in the workplace ,shops , restaurants etc the use of a calculator for the most very simple basic + - x sums .. and i mean basic ... 20 yr old pretty rajabhat student (studying to be a teacher  ) needing a calculator to work out 500 - 450 , the market traders 100 - 70 .. when ever i see just shake my head in disbelief.

In the past many moons ago i taught Singapore Mathematics in Bkk and very recently tried to help a local lass with simple quick maths calculations without a calculator real basic 1s 10s 100s 1000s columns stuff 25 x 10 / add the 0 she worked in a place where customers bought multiple items , after the initial interest was lost in less than 5 mins it was back to squeezing zits , checking her make up n hair and then murder death kill game on her smart phone .

Rant over .. lovely cool damp morning in the posh part of toon.

DM you are correct about the basics of maths around the shops.
But do give them their due, I have found being a non Thai speaker that it is habit to show a Falang the calculator cost. No confusion. Perhaps they don’t do that for Thais. Just saying.
The Falang teacher from my girls school has been doing live English lessons with a class group. Maybe not full on learning but at least it is a concerted effort to get them motivated and discussing stuff together. Its in English and I listen in from the sideline from time to time. He was very surprised when saying goodbye’s to all at the end of the lesson to hear me yell out seeya mate. I assume he doesn’t normally have parents online, he said who’s that, no thailish accent. I got in the picture to say thanks.
The govt really do need to get the kids back earlier then end July.
I had forgotten how long kids can sleep of a morning with the AC turned off and only a ceiling fan.

Come on DM, you know damn well Mental Arithmetic is not taught, as I found while teaching the maths was out of date and explained in such a complicated way I needed to look twice before I understood it . Times tables taught to many westerners is almost never taught . But FRACTIONS are in this ever increasing metric world one wonders why .

Maths like English is taught from a book no logical explanations ever given or offered. So individual thought is as always stymied as questions are never if ever answered. I found normally because the damn teachers do not know the answers.
