Many gardeners will be familiar with the gorgeous iridescence of the rose chafer, or perhaps the rosemary beetle, the little mint leaf beetle or simply bluebottles as they buzz annoyingly around the house. Some researchers believe iridescence is a way of evading being eaten: a study that trained quail to catch dots on a screen found that if the dots shifted colour — ie performed like iridescence, which changes with the angle of the light — it took the birds more pecks to hit each one. As for birds themselves, the structures that cause iridescence in feathers also increase strength and resistance to microbes: the flashy appearance could be a side-effect that later became useful in communicating fitness and attracting a mate.

Cattywampus

No, this isn’t a type of animal, it’s actually a direction and means the same thing as saying something is catty-corner from something else.

With their grey-blue upper parts and apricot underparts, nuthatches are charismatic birds. They have prominent black eye-stripes, and hefty, dagger-like beaks. Their behaviour also commands attention. A bold presence in the woods, they travel assertively both up and down tree trunks, and are the only UK bird to move headfirst down a trunk. Highly vocal, nuthatches call constantly through all seasons. Sedentary, they rarely fly further than the distance between the trees within their woodland territory, which ranges from two to 25 acres. They generally nest in old woodpecker holes, but being security conscious, often reduce the size of the entrance hole by packing wet mud round it. This prevents any predatory woodpecker from coming in and helping itself to the chicks.

Projection is a type of defense mechanism or means of coping. People may use defense mechanisms and unconscious mental strategies to cope with stressful or anxiety-provoking thoughts and experiences. When someone unconsciously attributes their thoughts, feelings, or behaviors to another person, they are projecting.

Finifugal

This is what you’d call someone who is afraid of finishing anything.

What does finifugal mean?

This arcane-sounding word was coined in the 1800s and infrequently used during the last century, the word makes sense if you break it down: fini is Latin for “end” and fugal is Latin for “flight.” If you’re feeling a bit finifugal at the moment, just hit the “back button.” Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they aren’t out to….help you?

The circular pond was ringed with ash and oak trees, the ground beneath them clothed in dog’s mercury, herb robert, bluebells and red dead-nettle. But here and there, tiny pinkish-white clusters of petals were held up above the undergrowth on long stems. They were the shy, fragile flowers of sanicle, a perennial umbellifer once renowned for its healing properties: the name comes from the Latin sanus, meaning healthy, whole or sound. Tracing the stem down to ground level it was possible to discover which leaves belonged to it: they looked a little like those of a buttercup, each with three to five toothed lobes, and occasionally seven. Its seeds are bristly and are distributed on animals’ fur — or humans’ clothing.

Even among birds that mate for life, such as house sparrows and swans, pair bonding is crucial: not least as a way to bring each other into breeding condition after winter, when reproductive hormone levels are low. Usually, male birds come into condition first in spring, triggered by increasing day length and food availability; then, gifts of food and nesting materials stimulate the release of hormones that prompt the female to become ready to mate. Paired birds may preen one another (known as allopreening) and greet one another with calls or displays; some species, such as great crested grebes, have elaborate courtship displays that continue long after the birds have mated, helping the bond to persist while they share parental care.
