Australian authorities were alerted to an outbreak of Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD) in Bali/Indonesia. As far as I know this alert was sounded 3 to 4 weeks ago. Probably most are aware of this disease breaking out in the UK in 2001 where an estimated 6 million livestock were destroyed.
The Aussie Fed.Govt. has sat on its hands and knees since then. The Agricultural Minister, the inept Murray Watt was sent to Indonesia to ascertain the extent of FMD and came back with no positive news. He is a lawyer from Brisbane and has no knowledge of the Ag business, except that steak comes from the shelves at Woolworths.
So far the Fed.Govt. has asked returning passengers from Indo to complete the arrival card, good luck that, if they have been where animals are located and clean their shoes, what a farce, at stake is an $80 billion meat industry in Oz and the consequent roll on to other industries. The Fed.Opp. has been calling for all travel to and from Indo to cease until it is safe to do so.
If this disease does manage to arrive in Oz, farmers, most of the population and associated industries will be baying for blood from this labor Govt.

Stop drinking the Murdoch Kool-Aid, Sport.
Farmers back open border with Indonesia as foot and mouth fears grow
Australia's peak farming body has backed the federal government's decision to keep the border with Indonesia open, even as fears over our nearest neighbour's foot-and-mouth disease outbreak continue to grow.......
...... National Farmers Federation president Fiona Simson said farmers had welcomed the action from the federal government, and that closing the border would damage important export markets with Indonesia.
But she and Agriculture Minister Murray Watt both suggested the situation could change.
Watt noted that multiple countries around the world had FMD both now and in the past, and no border closures had been put in place.

Re: Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD) on Australia's doorstep.
In 2003 or thereabouts, I was in South Korea when they had F & M
I decided to fly back to Adelaide via Thailand for a holiday and spend 2 weeks in Bangkok on the way through.
I arrived in Adelaide, having filled in the arrival card, then passed through Immigration
As soon as I have passed through the Immigration Counter, 2 Customs Officers come over and gently escort me over to some seats against the wall, in a taped off area.
Lady CO: Sir you have come from Korea, they have foot and mouth disease, there
Me: Yes I departed from Seoul
Lady CO: Sir we need your shoes!
Me: OK but why
Lady CO: We need to clean them for F & M
Me: Ok I said, but I have been in Bangkok for the past two weeks walking around the streets in these shoes
Lady CO: Doesn't matter Sir, we still need to clean them
Me: No problem but trust me (speaking to both her and him) nothing could survive on the streets of Bangkok for two weeks, especially where my shoes have been
Male CO He just smiled/ big grin
Me: I take off and hand over my Runners and sit for about 15 minutes
Lady CO: Comes back with my shoes, all shinny clean
Me: I take then back slowly and the tops of the shoes are all spotlessly clean. I mean almost like new. Then I slowly turn one of the shoes over. Naturally the bottoms look a bit discolored from walking through S...t but I spot a bit of dirt/mud stuck in one of the grooves
Me to Lady: But you missed a spot, (pointing to the very small bit of mud in the groove), with a smile. Can you please take them back to the cleaner and ask him to do them again.
She does and 10 minutes latter she comes back.
Lady CO: Shows me the shoes top and underside, and say, Sir, is that better.
Me: Being cheeky says, "thanks love and I will certainly come back here again".
I am then on my way. with smiles all round
True story.

With Foot & Mouth on the doorstep, a bloody expensive lesson for someone arriving in Darwin the other day.
