40.3 Centigrade yesterday UK

Post by rick » July 20, 2022, 5:43 pm

Well, as promised, the 40 degree mark was passed yesterday for the first time ever in the UK. I will not go on about global warming etc. as that is a given. Just did a bit of research and found these temperature record highs over the last 100 years.

36.7 Centigrade in 1911. This lasted until 1990 - 79 years
37.1 Centigrade in 1990. This lasted until 2003 - 13 years
38.5 Centigrade in 2003. This lasted until 2019 - 16 years
38.7 Centigrade in 2019. This lasted until 2022 - 3 years
40.3 Centigrade in 2022. Next?

No longer a 'once in a lifetime' event.

Brutal weather anywhere, but especially in houses not made to accommodate it.

Definitely hot for the UK, especially since AC is not prevalent in homes there. My 41.6 C here yesterday was tolerable in the U.S. with the central AC in the home.

Why is it that its only in UK that anything below 10C or above 25C causes major disruption ? 6 flakes of snow and the transport system fails, 2 days rain and there are major floods (in built up areas) , 2 weeks without rain and theres hosepipe bans and water shortages ......... other countries have far worse and just carry on regardless

I wonder if the mainly Australian, with a smattering of Yank and Pommie deniers here, have taken notice, and started to wonder why?

errr, you may be right.

But it doesn't seem to have been a problem - even in Pommyland - for several thousand years, until now.

And even if the sun stays in its current position (ie God doesn't move it closer), the earth seems to be in for a beating over the next few decades (at a minimum).

Do you wonder why?

A lot of French died during the 2003 heat wave.

I was listening to a scientist on the radio today who said that when the ambient temperature exceeds the human body's temperature, additional physiological stresses kick in. Northern (and southern) hemisphere dwellers in temperate zones can't handle the heat because they aren't acclimatized.

As for melting runways and buckled railroad tracks, once again, it's due to temperatures outwith the normal. Infrastructure in (say) Spain is designed and manufactured to accommodate higher temperatures for longer. They also regulate what can and can't be done or what can safely operate during hot weather because they are used to hotter weather than the UK.

Over the past eight years or so, There's been many countries who have definitely not managed to carry on regardless.

I will admit that I think that yesterday's coverage of the 'London fires' by UK media was OTT.

Weve had nearly 50 yrs since "The summer of 76" to make sure that our infrastructure is capable of withstanding higher/lower temps and done b*gger all about it. Why doesn't DB grind to a halt in the Autumn when a few leaves fall on the tracks ......... because they spend money making sure those type of trees dont grow next to the bl**dy track

Once in a lifetime or once in a generation?

Either way, it's half-past time for a Scottish independence referendum, no?

The humidex in Toronto has been 40C+ for the past few days. Unlike the 1950s and much of the 1960s, we can now turn on the aircon or go to an air conditioned shopping centre to beat the heat. Consequently, British North America is not sweltering in the heat unless we sally forth outdoors for a stroll.

I think Greta's view has a damn site more credibility than that of climate deniers.

Mind you, does anyone else think it rather strange that so many fires started on that one day? The temp was only one or two degrees less the day before, the grass was just as dry and tinderbox, yet no fires? Do I smell a smoldering extinction rebellion sized RAT here? ............. wouldn't be the first time they have done stupid things

There's a reason the government's met office had already labeled temperatures around 40 °C as red meaning maximum danger.

Listening to a chap on the radio who saw one of the "London fires" erupt in his neighbours compost heap. They are naturally a hothouse of subsurface decomposition so when the ambient air temperature exceeds the temperature in the heap, up she goes.

Here's how excessive heat buggers up hyoomin thermostats.
