Next Monday marks the 50th anniversary of New Money (p's) instead of Old Money (d's)
UK started to use decimal currency on 15th Feb 1971 when we suddenly only got 100 penny chews for a pound instead of the 240 we got the day before
Mind your "p"s & "d"'s

In 1971 I was a lowly bank clerk in a now long gone bank, one of my tasks was lugging huge bags of old pennies between the other banks in the town, so I for one was happy to see in decimal coinage.

RIP half crowns, shillings, sixpences, thrupennies, ha'pennies and the ten bob note.

Yes I remember when the new coinage came in,in the Military we were on exercise in the middle of dartmoor and we went to the local small shop to purchase items and the old lady there called the Police because she thought that the Army was trying to pass bad money, when the Police arrived it took them some time to convince this old lady that it was legal. That was really funny.

My old man was a bank manager & I can remember him bringing home a decimal coin proof set the day before launch.
