Bringing my ENGLISH staffordshire bull terrier

Post by nel123 » June 8, 2013, 1:26 am

Hi all, great site....

Please please can someone give me a 100% concrete yes or no to my question?

Can I bring my English Staffordshire bull terrier into the country from the uk??
Thai websites say that American pitbulls and American staffords are banned from entering the country, it doesn't say anything about "English". Pitbulls are banned from the uk so I can understand that.
All day I have spoken or emailed airlines, pet exporters, DEFRA, an agent in Thailand but as of yet I have not had a definitive yes or no!!!!
I really don't want to leave her behind, we have two other dogs that are coming also but this decision to come and live in Thailand hinges on this decision. Dog lovers will understand, others will not.
So...... Does anybody out there have any recent experience with this breed?

I wait in anticipation

Cheers all

Hi Ifat,

Let me start by saying that were still not 100% sure whether we can bring our dog to Thailand. I researched and made various phone calls and emails, after 2 weeks I decided to stop as it was giving me a serious headache!! I will tell you what I know and what I've been told.....

Firstly Thai customs state that your not allowed to bring in an "American" Staffordshire bull terrier, ours are obviously not American, this was my first question to them. All they said to me was I must send them photos of our dog. We didn't go forward with this as we weren't in a position to move yet. But when your ready you must send them photos and all inoculations so they can/cannot issue you with a permit. Secondly the pain was the airlines! Eva air said NO! British airways said NO! Thai air you can send as cargo but not as excess baggage. KLM seemed to be the most helpful and are pet friendly, you can send them as cargo. The reason the airlines won't take them is because they're on the banned dogs list! Even half the pet exporters I phoned said no, others said yes! You can see why my head was hurting! We managed to find a pet importer in bangkok, after countless emails to him and we sent photos of our dog, he went to customs and they apparently said no problem. To send our dog cargo won't be cheap though, the money side of it isn't a problem though. But you could be looking at approximately £1200-£1500 all inclusive. We have two other dogs which will be coming as excess baggage, this will cost approx £600-£700 per dog but because we will probably end up having to go through the proper channels with our staff, this is the price to pay. Just make sure your dogs inoculations etc are up to date, you can get more information from DEFRA and your vet should be able to assist also. Sorry I can't be more help at this time but I've tried to forget about this for the time being, it's stressful enough trying to sell your house and deal with estate agents etc! All I really wanted to know for those two weeks of endless research etc was, is my dog allowed into Thailand? To this day I'm still none the wiser!! Good luck mate! If you get any info before I do, please get in touch and I will do the same. Kind regards Scott

Dear Khun Noi,

Overlooked to mention that Thai Government Vet at Bangkok Airport confirmed that
your dog is NOT banned from importation into Thailand.

But to re-confirm this point, please email us a color photo of your dog so we can
re-confirm this with the Thai Government Vet once again.

Best regards,

Krit Wong

I for one am glad the breed is banned in Thailand, Thais are not responsible enough to care for that type of dog, it would be great coming across ten stray staffies in a quiet soi, no thanks!

Coxo, I have to agree with you Staffies are natural fighting dogs. In the UK they are often kept by ' Macho' owners having donned them with a black studded leather collar. According to Google some EU countries have banned them. It also mentions Thailand being one of the additional countries although it is unclear if the legislation is now law.
As far as Nel's insults are concerned I would assume he has broken the rules of UM and a moderator will block this thread
