Re: 20 or 40 foot shipping containers
Vince, did you ever find one? I'm also looking to buy one locally, if possible. I know all about the sellers in Chonburi, but the shipping cost is high. Quite a few businesses have sprung up in the last year using old shipping containers--a trendy practice that finally made it to Udon.vincemunday wrote: ↑January 26, 2017, 10:26 amAnyone know where I can source a shipping container? I need one for my bit of land to keep my tools in etc.
And yes, I realize I could have a shed built, but the whole point of the ocean-going cargo containers is the versatility in moving them around. I have two forty-footers back in the States.
Anyway, just checking to see if anyone is aware of any for sale locally.

Would it not be better to buy a retired freezer box ? I know a guy local that has a few out for sale near Sri Thani golf coarse . Not 20ft though but certainly big enough for a shed , and just as mobile as a metal box .

Saint,
I would have any container i bought under roof cover, but, yes, I'd like to take a look at the freezer boxes for sale.
Do you have a more exact location? Please PM me if possible. Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: 20 or 40 foot shipping containers
Thanks so much. I found the items and we spoke to the owner--have reserved two of them and putting down a deposit tomorrow. My brother-in-law can clean them up and make them secure on the cheap. They will go on a cement slab, end-to-end, and eventually be covered. Can't really get large items into them, but these will work just fine. Cheers,

I think you're better off to build your own storage shed. It doesn't have to be long and narrow that way with the huge door on the end. Containers are ugly. The advantage of containers is that they can be moved from site to site without damaging them. The average homeowner will never move a shed built on his property and the shed can be an attractive storage area.

Re: 20 or 40 foot shipping containers
This are refeers, which is a big plus. They are not ocean-going cargo containers, so don't have a large door one the end. They held electrical equipment at Udon Airport. In my case, they are going to a property for no more than a year, then I will move them. Dirt cheap for a truck and crane to move them to my desired location in Udorn: 2000 THB.
I don't think they look that bad, but if I was concerned with looks, I wouldn't be living in an ugly-ass city like Udon Thani!

Maaka, I drove the highway north toward Nong Kai today, but didn't notice anyplace with multiple shipping containers. Do you recall if they were on the east or west side of the road? I'm leaving for the States in a couple of days, so I don't have much time for searching, but if you can remember any other details as to the location, that would be swell.maaka wrote: ↑October 27, 2018, 11:14 amI saw a place selling I think, ( or leasing perhaps ) shipping containers on No.2 highway somewhere between the Phen turnoff and city limit..wasnt paying much attention as was cruising along, but at a glance I am sure thats what it was..

Re: 20 or 40 foot shipping containers
Glalt is correct. Why not look at the cost of building one yourself, to a more user friendly shape. The frame is easy to construct if you have a welder or know some who does weld.glalt wrote: ↑October 27, 2018, 9:19 amI think you're better off to build your own storage shed. 1.Steel Frame: The Box sections, welding rods and paint, should cost you around TB 17,500, plus the labor to weld, if you need it.
2.Cladding & Flashing: The 60m2 of Bluescope or Other, will probably cost you around TB 33,000 (I think), but at least this way you can choose the color you want and it will be pre-finished as new. i.e. no dents, no rust.
3.Flooring: Go for Smart Wood or Smart Board from SGC. 10 mm thick will cost you around TB 450 for a 240cm x 120cm Sheet. So if you double it up to two layers (20mm thick) it will cost you around TB 5,300 for the materials, including some floor sealer.
All up, so far, you are looking at around TB 55,800 plus some labor, plus a set of steel or other double door at one end and you can build it to a much more user friendly shape. Plus it will look like a new garden shed. So say TB 65,000 as an approx cost All Finished and looks nice.
Buying an secondhand container even locally (if you can find one in reasonable condition) will cost you about the same, maybe even more and it will need sanding and painting outside and probably inside, plus delivery costs. This alone will add another TB 12,000 to your initial purchase price and it will never look as good as the new one you built.
Most 20 Ft Containers that I have seen for sale, range from around TB 60,000 - 80,000, so they are not cheap second hand.

Good info, and I think for a lot of guys here, it's a good way to go. Thanks for outlining your price estimates.
The two containers I just purchased cost 18,000 THB each, which includes delivery and crane unload. So 36,000 THB for the pair. They are fully insulated, and even in the hot sun, are very comfortable inside. At best I'll spend another 2000 baht to get them into the condition I want. Dimensions are 15.5' long X 7.5' wide X 7.5" tall. About the same width and height as a twenty-foot cargo container, but 4.5 feet shorter. The price, however, is a real bargain.
They're going initially to a rural location and won't be an eyesore. To be perfectly blunt, they look better than 99% of the structures in the nearest village.
As I previously mentioned, I've been using steel cargo containers--kept at an airport--in the U.S. for many years and am very comfortable with them. But, hey; one man's meat is another man's poison.

Re: 20 or 40 foot shipping containers
Where on earth did you find them for TB 18,000 each in Thailand.
That is a real bargain
The last place I looked was "Container Kings" down Nonthaburi way and they were over TB 50,000 excluding VAT and excluding Delivery, depending on Condition and that was a few years back

There is a Thai man with a construction-related business who buys items at military and government auction. He has a collection of old U.S. military vehicles in multiple locations; most of the vehicles are pure crap and don't run, BTW.pipoz4444 wrote: ↑October 28, 2018, 5:34 pmWhere on earth did you find them for TB 18,000 each in Thailand.

As for the containers he's selling, I believe they came out of Wing 23, where they once held electronics, or possibly large air-conditioning units. Anyway, it's a one-off deal. It's not like he has them in stock regularly. He bought them thinking he would take them all to Bangkok, then realized transportation would be too expensive, so decided to sell them here.
I don't think farangs can bid at the military / government auctions, but I would love for my wife to get signed up! I might start another thread about that.
