How to find value of your vehicle
Hey guys, I have a friend who wants to sell his 2006 Isuzu Quad cab pickup truck. He has no idea what a fair value should be and is somewhat at a loss to find a fair value. Perhaps somebody out there know how to find this.
thanks

John, as far as I am aware there is no "official" price list issued.
I think the best bet is to buy one of the motoring magazines available. As well as advertising a host of second hand garage cars some of them also have tables showing the current value of different models by year.
Another way might just be a troll round the second hand places in Udon.

start with the insured value if stolen/totaled. that's about all he will get, maybe a bit more if farang buys it. what ever the market bears after insured value, good benchmark. sold/traded in 2003 toy. Vios, ins value 300, got 300, they probably tried to sell at 400, can buy new at 500k. I was happy, high kms, and next 30k kms would need some higher end regular maintenance.

I have problem getting my head round the concept that if a farang owns a vehicle then it's worth more secondhand.
Are you assuming that all Thais are crooks. I don't and if you do I think you have a problem.
If a Thai goes to a main dealer for servicing and the service book is legally stamped by the dealer, what's the difference?

I see plenty of 'farang' owned vehicles back in the UK, and plenty of them are not looked after, seen so so many Used pick-up trucks on sale in Udon, that have been well looked after and most if not all have been owned and driven by Thais...i wouldn't value a 'farang' owned car more than i would a thai owned one.
As long as its been well looked after and is an original example, stamps in a service book don't always count for too much, if the servicing is also on printed receipts then thats better, or just call the main dealer garage and get them verify dates and klms of services if you are unsure.
If Khun Somchai Nappaporn has the same Toyota for sale and it is in the same condition on offer as Mr Robert Taylor's Toyota,, would i pay more for Mr Robert's Truck....no.
If Khun Somchai's is in a poorer state, with suspect klm's, un-original paint and covered in dents and scratches, and tatty interior trim..then you would look at Mr Robert's Vehicle, providing its far superior to Khun Somchai's, thats when it would be worth more, but not because its 'farang' owned but because its the better buy.

gallee, i think the point is that a lot, but not all thai owned vehicles are poorly maintained, where as farang vehicles in thailand are usually in better condition. ive looked at many used thai vehicles, no service records, oil as black as coal, smoke belching out the back ect. any used car thats been maintained by a dealer whether farang or thai owned would be of a similar price i think.
I haven't seen many vehicles belonging to Thais which have a FSH (Full Service History) backed up by receipts, low mileage (they think 200,000km is low), any kind of Annual inspection check (MOT) and what really scared me was seeing someones 'written off' car pull up outside my house - looking like new 6 months later.
Having said that I have probrably been looking in the wrong places and taking care of your car is a personal pride thing which bears little resemblence to your nationality. As the post above says - there are some farang owned cars that are downright disgusting inside and out, just as there are Thai ones too.

cut and shuts, as there called are very common here, ive seen plenty crabbing up the road, including heavy trucks and buses, buying second hand is a bit of a gamble in thailand, unless you really know what your doing. and the prices for second hand in my view are silly baht. much better to buy new even if it means down grading.

The better examples i have seen have mainly been(1-4 year old) Fords , Mazdas and Izuzu's in that order, must be something about a Ford/Mazda owner, more mature perhaps, the young guns seem to go for Toyotas, which there seem to be some poor examples on offer.
But obviously there are poor examples in every make/shape and form.
Yes lots of crabbing on the highways, i can't stay behind them for to long it makes your eyes go funny, and you never know which way they really are trying to go.
