Don't put your galoshes away yet. The weather bureau has issued another advisory for Udon/Loei surrounding areas for the next few days. Thinking yesterday was going to be a dry day, the sky opened up around 7pm, no wind but lots of rain. Pause. Then wind and another cloudburst. We'll see what the next few days bring.
Announcement of the Meteorological Center of the Upper Northeast Khon Kaen Province, No. 1, titled areas in heavy rain Between 20-24 July 2022
These include Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, Maha Sarakham, Khon Kaen and Chaiyaphum.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the rainfall amounts for all of Udon, but generally, they're accurate for the area around kilo 18. According to the photo, Bangdung got 143mm of rain yesterday. That's just shy of 6". Hope the rice farmers didn't get hit at the wrong time.

Certainly wasn't around town, where I live. And no signs of it today (muddy tracks etc) heading out of town in a south easterly direction on a ride for about 20km and then back.

The Dero may have more info about north of the town.

We have had 2 nearly dry days in our village - but in both directions in and out the roads are still flooded (how deep depends on any pumps running, when they are turned off the road floods again). 2 or 3 sois in the next village still have hoses in place for pumping water out. All the drainage ditches still full.

The 4 days forecast is 70%, 80%, 70%, 60%. I'd keep a boat handy!

I think you will find that is HUMIDITY not precipitation . Either way luckily with that Humidity, the temperature is cooler, so not so exhausting

From the reports I've seen, those numbers refer to the chance of rain. Humidity is also likely an issue, of course. A friend in Pattaya told me that he also saw the same predictions of rain over the next few days.

Ah, there's the culprit. Quick look at https://www.windy.com/ shows that the prevailing winds are now from the south, over the water. Earlier in the week, they were from the east.

I was stating what it said on MY THJAI WEATHER WEB SITE, so if you have an issue with that please advise the Thai national Weather5 Forecasting metrology web site, thank-you .

Looked at various predictions including Windyty, it appears top mainly NORTH of Udon, we will get some fallout I am sure, but strong winds and deluges not on the cards, but hey ho as we know here forecasting is at best iffy !!

As an expert with almost two decades of Vietnam typhoon dodging, that one's too far north to have any impact on Oodorn. They need to track over open, warmer waters south of Hainan to build up serious water content and come ashore around Da Nang to dump on lower Laos. Then we see the rivers and creeks filling up here a few days later. Making landfall further south and again, category 3 and up before that landfall, we'll see heaviest rains on the north side of the depression, floods on the Mitrapharp, everyone talking about their rain gauges, remembering the great flood of 2000, Bandung being declared an island and not needing to water the garden. Mak's got a great story about watching the torrent from Harry's Bar.

I stumbled across this good read about Udon Thani. It's the city of spongers apparently.

" remembering the great flood of 2000"
13" in 6 hours at kilo 18. The rain quickly enough drained off of our property.......but 150+ below is the soupbowl of Udon central. HuiLuang had to completely open their gates. Convoys of men in scuba gear and officials announcing caution at the cracks in the "American Dam" (it's the American Dam when it's near bursting). Nearly the entire area by Maliwan to Nadi was under water. Downtown Udon flooded for a good 4-5 days. VOA houses near BB resort flooded.
In the ensuing 22 years, lots of drainage work put in......BUT, thousands and thousands of rai filled in for subdivisions and businesses. It may have been a one-off event, but one-off events happen from time to time. God only know where the water will flow next time around.
I've always been curious about what meteorological event caused that storm.....was it remnants of a tropical storm? I don't recall any wind.....but I remember the rain coming down like I've never seen before.

Spongers is the western version......monkey cheeks (แก้มลิง) is the Thai version. Interestingly, the city is investing a chunk of change (over a billion baht) in the International Horticultural Expo slated for 2026 at the sight of the main monkey cheek for Udon.....just off the Nongkai Hwy, not far from Do Home.

What month of the year was it? If it was between June and October, chances are it was a Cat 4 or 5 typhoon that landed in Vietnam and then maybe stalled over Isaan due to pressure ridges.

With this monkey pox thing getting too much bandwidth, I prefer the sponge city nomenclature.
