Monthly expat meetup?

Post by rick » May 22, 2023, 6:35 am

Many years ago there used to be a monthly expat meetup; was a good way to put faces to names. Died a death, not sure why, maybe lack of parking in town or too many Keyboard commandos afraid to meet their enemies .....
Now that Covid is basically over, anyone interested? If so, any preferred time or location?

The gallery, Chris's place, Papa farang's, Just some suggestions.

It died because of the smoking ban in the night market. Most of the attendees spent more time walking to/from the smoking area to have a puff that they remained there for a couple of tabs before returning. That left the odd farang who didnt smoke to chat to the wives/gf who were non smokers. Back in the day, the area used at n/m for meet up had a view of the big tv screen which showed the football which helped as far as Brits were concerned
When other venues were proposed it always seemed people were suggesting this guys bar or that guys bar, but it was, it seemed, more to get at the other bloke than promoting a good venue.
I remember "he allows people to smoke at his bar" being a reason not to go ............ but that was the very reason many wanted to go there as previously, smoking at the meet ups in night market had never been a reason not to attend

I dont recall that many smokers at the meet up. just a few really.
Maybe nowadays even less smokers
I dont remember a ban on smoking there.I think they just moved into the road out of curtisy?
Was good time.An atmosphere....even with the smoking!
Would be great to have a meet up again. But where, no idea!

Those days most of us kew many othersand were prsonal friiends not just keyboard friends.
These days many do NOT know others personally and judging by the current crop most keybopard so-called friends would not make good face to face conversations.
Too much control and itty bitty side swipes at many does not make a good reason to meet-up. Smokers , drinkers notwithstanding , no longer a good idea methinks.

When they banned smoking in the seated area they designated a cordoned off area near the toilets as a smoking zone.
I was in the process of "cutting down" at the time so would only have been smoking one or two a night, but still ended up spending most of the evening standing over there as that was where people were chatting

I dropped in to see Dean last week, still far too sick to open the restaurant, so for time being not a choice
I had a bumper sticker in Texas that read 'Beam me up Scotty'. I often wish I could find one in Udon Thani

How about the Kinnaree, if Thet is up for it, out of town, plenty of room, good parking, food if you want and two Pool tables.
Assuming it still trades and Thet is running it.

Is there not an establishment with out door area?
I liked the NM because it was open area.
I am not a bar beer fan really.
Deans would have been a good choice. Its kind of open area at the back there.
There was the old bookhouse. That was OK.
I think like a Beer garden type of place.
Like have in UK
There must be places like that around?

One of the big selling points of the old night market was the fact it was in the middle of town and the wives/gfs could take themselves off shopping for an hour or so whilst the guys could have a chat in peace over a beer or six (and the Thai ladies were surrounded by Thai food which always seems to please them)

Soi Paradise, where I have my book shop, has a large open-air bar/restaurant almost opposite.

Just across the soi from my bookshop. No problem parking and appears to be no problem smoking. If you want to watch TV for football etc, just ask.

It is a Thai place, owner very friendly, rather than farang but all are welcome and I’ve enjoyed a few beers there myself, go take a look.

Yes, this is the large, open-air place on the corner, close to the Paradise Hotel.

Sorry that I have no photos, and since I'm currently in Phnom Penh, unable to take any.

For those interested, go take a look, have a beer and perhaps cross the road and say Hi to my Lek, in our bookshop.

Best wishes, Fuzzyken

Sounds big enough to accommodate the regular meetings of the UM weight watchers club.

I’m sure it will be large enough to accommodate all shapes and sizes, without radical modification. Weight watchers and bird watchers can rest at ease.

It was along time ago when Lars and Richard, sadly both RIP, drew up the constitution, following difficulties with the original expat club. Meetings back then were held at what was, Paolo Hospital. I wonder whether any of those members are still around.

As suggested, go take a look

If it’s the massage place near the corner past Paradise Hotel, it packed up at the time COVID struck but there’s been a few attempts at re-opening since.

I walked past there a few days ago and it appeared closed, dusty and abandoned.
