Thanks Mr Doo, I was looking for local experience, prices, brands etc.
IE, for example, I bought one from Global, it cost me 5,000bht, the bulb lasted about two years and was easy to get a replacent, the brand name was called " Thingy Fi-Nam-Sa-At" Chinese but good quality. Running costs 300bht per month.

Rather than run the gauntlet of salesmen on commission at the home improvement outlets, check out one of the specialist shops? This one is near me.

I have purchased a couple of purification systems, both from Global House. They were both inexpensive units (6.000b and under).
I stopped using the first one because it would not filter out the calcium in our well water (nothing will), and am still using the second.
Our current system used a built-in pump that failed almost immediately, when I replaced it with a higher quality pump purchased on Lazada that pump failed not long after being installed also.
So I modified the system to work without the pump.

I recently talked at length to one of the sales representatives at DoHome about water systems (sorry but I forgot his name) and he was very knowledgeable and explained the different systems and the various problems they have.
I plan on purchasing a new system from DoHome. It will most likely be a more expensive system that is used in many of the schools.

Thanks for the info, I am still experimenting with my water supply, I've been using well water which looks great when extracted but when left to stand in storage tanks for 24 hrs the iron content in the water oxidizes and turns the water cloudy and leaves heavy iron deposits, if left for another two days the water runs clear again as the brown deposits drop to the bottom of the tank.
Filtering the iron deposits works but clog up the filters very quickly.
We live on the banks of a river which flows all year round so I'm looking at using the water from there, the UV Filter was going to be part of the filter set up to kill the Bugs.
I'm also looking at chlorinating the final storage tank in the set up instead of the UV Filter, the water is only used for washing, showering etc, we buy in water for drinking. Apparently chlorine also kills the good bugs so I will have to run a separate supply to the toilet pàns so as not to upset the decomposure going on in the Sceptic Tanks.

i have never understood the need for a whole house water filter for normal shower/kitchen ,toilet ...use unless you would have very dirty water supply in your home , it would be an extreme case should your water supply be harmful to your health , any way now staying in udon and having city water that is reasonably clean (72PPM with tds meter ) the only thing i have done is installed a standard reverse osmosis filter (cost about 3.500baht ) which i have modified with some extra switches to work fully automatic including uv lamp , only to make the city water better drinkable (cleaner) and use for cooking ,small tip here if you connect a reverse osmosis to an automatic pump , it will ruin your pump , because it will be continuously starting and stopping due to to low pressure , so best is direct city water supply without a pump, i am also not using these pressure tanks , but a 20L tank to store the ro water and have a small extra supply pump to the faucet in the kitchen sink , and do not forget with ro filter you will need a waste water connection , the filters are inexpensive , about 500-600 baht including the ro element , i change these filters every 6 months , and ro yearly ...
have a mano meter to check the pressure , when too low (under 50psi , best working ro is between 60-80 psi pressure ) it is time to change filter..... as info ... ;)

forgot to mention , many water filters on the market do not really work properly , an easy way to check is with the TDS meter (lazada /shopee ,100 baht) , measure your water before and after filtering , if it is not significant lower after the filtering , the filter is rubbish ...in my case with the ro filter , the city water has a value of 72 PPM and after the ro filtering 3 PPM , i can live with that :D

Thanks for the info Mr Kopkei, I was going to get the water tested after I had set up my filtration system but the TDS meter is a new one on me so I'll be sending off for one asap, the readings you have shown will be a useful guide.

Having fun with my new TDS meter, River water before and after my filtration system, 199, Well water 406 (I suspect high due to the iron deposits) Rainwater 14, Drinking water from our regular supplier 4.
Conclusions so far, River water acceptable for my intended purpose, bathing, dish and clothes washing, cleaning etc.
Mineral water deposits sorted, now need to work on the bugs, Chlorine or UV.
Trolling through the info available on the Net a proper water test can cost upwards of 4000bht so I may pass on that.
I've managed to survive the past 10 years on my Well water so I hope the new water source can be as good.
I note that although a low TDS reading is desirable, many of the minerals that are filtered out with a RO system have a beneficial effect.

Nearly forgot, I notice when I try to source a UV lamp for filtration on the Net they appear to range from about 5watts to 100watts.
Logic would say that the more powerful the light the higher the bug kill rate, no advice to be found as to what I need for my DIY system, anyone have a clue?
Maybe it's down to flow rate, IE litres per minute etc.
As suggested before maybe I should go talk to a Filtration expert at one of the shops in Udon, but I'm a bit wary of biased advice.

It always seems to me a purely personal thing to have or not as he case maybe full filtration for the house `

Water from a major supplier be that Village or Town normally accpetable for General cleaning of clother and body. Drinking I get hat from drinking water suppliers , one politely informed me that following their processes, they add certain items they remove during the process of cleaning to bring into line with acceptable drinking water.

My well supplies thje garden and as long as it is not salty I do not suppose the plants really give a damn.

Pay for a filtration system is not only costly but over the years has to be maintained, while Bottled Drinking maintains the current price I would not bother with home filtration water . I did work it out once and generally apart from the inconvenience of storing drinking water it is cheaper to buy as opposed to install ( costs included maintnance and renewables etc

as KP alludes to .. i find myself agreeing with him ..

I was given a filtration system but did not fit it as was informed the when filters need changing it is a tad expensive , got 2 decent size watter tanks full all the time for house use etc and buy bottled drinking water from JD BEVERAGE , handy location , excellent quality water in all shapes n sizes , great service and prices as many can attest too... im guessing that plug must be worth a can of Chang at least.

Yeah, I don't plan on drinking the water, just want it not to be a health hazard, River water must be crawling with microscopic nasties, Buffalo, Cattle and humans dumping into it etc, I'm all for cheap solutions.
Here's my DIY project so far, Gravel, Sand and Activated Carbon, water runs clear after going through the 3 Barrels.

Thanks DM, he helped me with my problems a few weeks ago when he suggested using the Badan4thai App to identify the type of ground water we have in my locality.
I'm nearly there jus got to sort out the Virus's and Bacteria.

Just got time enough a quick reply, BillaRickaDickay.

- If you plan to use chlorine, it needs some soaking time so you would need to use a dosimeter and holding tanks.
- Your iron would be best removed with a Manganese Zeolite/Anthracite filter first then Activated Carbon for the smell and removal of any residual Chlorine if you hit it with that first (sorry, I didn't read the entire thread if this is managed)
- If water softening is required, the resin tank would be next. If you go full on then ceramic filters and RO but I didn't see that you want all that.
- These pressurized tanks get pretty spendy and require regular back-flushing although automatic flushing valves can be purchased too. The material needs replacing as well so this can possibly be more than you want to deal with.

- UV-C is a great way to kill the bugs at the end of the filtration regime. You could likely get away with about a 36 watt setup. The bulbs are best left on 24/7 even if no flow as switching them on/off reduces the life. We change our bulbs annually as they are quoted to have a 10,000 hour life and do degrade over time. I buy them on Lazada and get Phillips Bulbs made in Poland. There is a shop on the east ring road that stocks the housings called 99 (something) If I pass by in the next few days I'll edit with a location if you are interested.

Thanks Potamoi, that's a real help, didn't think to use Chlorine before the filtration set up, that way no need to worry about the smell and skin contact as the filtration will take that out. I'm guessing also that removing the Chlorine during the filtration will negate the detrimental affect on the Sceptic Tanks.
A good friend has just donated a UV lamp so things are coming together nicely.
Not sure about the Dosimeter, Google tells me it's to measure Radiation, I guess there's a link somewhere. Lazada has a meter to measure PH and Chlorine levels?
Gonna keep me busy for a couple of weeks so hope to do an update for anyone else thinking about DIY water filtration from a dodgy source.
