check deposit
check deposit
A friend once mentioned he would write himself a check from his Canadian bank and deposited it in his Thai
bank. It took a couple weeks to clear but not much for charges.
Does that sound possible? Im returning in a month and thought that may be an easy way for a biggish transfer.
Otherwise I believe I can still take 10,000CDN cash with me?
Thanks

Re: check deposit
Much easier and less expensive to use Transferwise to just transfer from Canadian account to Thai.marcusb wrote: ↑August 1, 2022, 3:55 amA friend once mentioned he would write himself a check from his Canadian bank and deposited it in his Thai

There are no limits to the amount of cash you can carry.marcusb wrote: ↑August 1, 2022, 3:55 amA friend once mentioned he would write himself a check from his Canadian bank and deposited it in his Thai

But there are limits to the amount of undeclared cash.
I do not have the Canadian requirements but they are to be similar to the U.K. ones
Under £1,0000 nothing
Between £1,000 and £9,999 you can be asked where the money is coming from, you can be required to provide proof of origin
Over £10,000 you must declare any money, lack of a declaration or unsatisfactorily explained origin is a prima-facie reason for detention of money

In my posts all fees and requirements are the standard R&R but TIT and a brown envelope can make incredible changes YMMV.

Plus I do believe you have to declare for Thai customs when entering the country, not sure of amount though.sometimewoodworker wrote: ↑August 2, 2022, 9:11 amThere are no limits to the amount of cash you can carry.marcusb wrote: ↑August 1, 2022, 3:55 amA friend once mentioned he would write himself a check from his Canadian bank and deposited it in his Thai

Re: check deposit
I think cash or monetary instrument declarations worldwide are pegged at the US$10,000 or the equivalent thereof. Since it's been a while since I delivered a suitcase of wonga to Prince Charles, it could have all changed.

Re: check deposit
The requirements are quite variable but they are universal in requiring declarations of any amounts over the limits.
Ethiopia requires each currency amount over £3,000 to be individually declared and I was escorted to the chief customs officers office to make my declaration.
The cash declaration for Thailand is $20,000

Re: check deposit
Got a message from Transferwise, fees going up:
Some of our fees are increasing on 09-08-2022 on routes to:
Send money from USD, CHF, CAD, JPY, HUF, MYR, TRY, INR, SEK, PLN, CZK, DKK, NOK and RON to any currency.
Send money to USD, INR, THB, PHP, IDR, MYR, MXN, PLN, PKR, KRW, VND, MAD and HUF from any currency.
Why is this happening?
Unfortunately, markets have been more volatile recently, which makes it more expensive for us to buy and sell currencies — so we need to raise our fees to cover those costs.
We continue to sustainably invest in our infrastructure so you can move money faster and more conveniently. We need to reflect this in our price today, to help us bring down the cost of moving money in the future.
We know that this isn't great news, and we're sorry about that. We'll try to bring our fees back down as soon as we can.

Thanks for all the info and links, appreciated.
For me seems like taking a check along is the easiest and no messing with the internet.
Cheers.

The cash declaration for Thailand is $20,000

I thought the import of US$20k (equivalent) was the limit but the Bank of Thailand regulations are quite convoluted with great gobs of cash permitted to walk across certain land borders while other destinations have a much lower amount. Here it says the import and/or export amount is unlimited but needs to be declared if exceeding 450,000 Baht or USD 15,000 or its equivalent.

Re: check deposit
The limits for different amounts for Thailand are variable and there have been variations both on import and export within the last 10 years. For non Thai cash import it has been $50,000, $20,000 & $15,000. However the recent drop (most websites have not changed the information to $15,000) is within the last couple of years. There is every likelihood that the cash declaration will change again. The declaration limits are as likely to go up as to go down.tamada wrote: ↑August 9, 2022, 6:00 am"The most frequent threshold amount of cash (or equivalent) that may cross a national border without restriction is US$10,000, or some national equivalent, usually rounded to multiples of 1,000."sometimewoodworker wrote: ↑August 2, 2022, 10:10 pmThe requirements are quite variable but they are universal in requiring declarations of any amounts over the limits.
