Ethos a word that will probably invoke many theories depending on who you are, but in my book , a Web site that offered to others useful help and advice pertaining to living in Thailand and some of the pitfalls others have had while doing so.

Sadly so many posts get hi-jacked by others in order to puirsue their own agenda and in my book certainly NOT a place for in depth political arguments or discussions, which are in my book a complete waste of time as 99% of the people posting WILL NEVER go back to their own countries and do something about the problems.

The latest big problem Covid those posts have tried to keep focused but still people try to make arguments by invoking politics into the discussion which bears NO resemblance to what is happening on the GROUND HERE v!!!!!!!!!!!!

From what I remember the original UM web site/forum was started about 2002 by the publishers of the news letter and map showing places of interest with a bit of advertising. Monthly??? I know we could pick up a copy down the olde Farang Alley (opposite central plaza in the car park). I'm guessing the forum was intended to replace the paper version of the newsletter and adding a bit of banter.

In 2005 the web site was closed and had a complete make over, the original members had to resign up to the new. Some of those started a breakaway web site called Nong Khai Map but that took a slow death - Then came Udon Talk (no comment!)

Edit:- Typo

I believe UM was founded by a young chap called Lee .. not sure exactly when but the website morphed from the monthly magazine ..

You could put that question to Paul the owner im sure he would offer the most accurate answer as opinions from members will differ greatly ..

in my case I just take it for what it is .. after the first in no particular order

** A bit of fun not to be taken too seriously
plus
Info needed /given, where to buy stuff
Business advertising / deals etc
Brit Football n banter that goes with it
Keeping updated with varying restrictions , example traffic and more recently covid rules n regs.
LOCAL news

Most certainly NOT for reasons below as the forum seems to have all the ""experts"" it needs without me contributing as i aint no genius politician or doctor n dont own a crystal ball.

Changing the course of history and mankind as we know it
Keeping a breast of WORLD Politics

** i did find UM a great platform for marketing both CC and the Tap.

Originally the Map was an informative website that gave the local farang community an opportunity to read about local events such as Pool and Golf results. There was even Map members monthly meetings.
Unfortunately the Map has become mainly an advertising business.

if you want world politics you can simply read any propaganda from the newspapers. Bad enough listening to "pundits" .."experts" and "analysis" on the news. then we get the copy and paste warriors seeking out echo chamber conspiracy theories. About as interesting as photos of what you had for breakfast. one day I'll take a photo of what my breakfast looks like in the toilet 12 hours after my body finishes processing it. it's a local forum. with way too much nothing to do with udon. luckily we do have a few posters that do pass on info about where, what, and how.

people are allowed to post whatever they want, but i prefer infomation not trash. that you can find anywhere on the internet. as you say finding out where something is available somewhere local, or finding an ear specialist , or even where to get a covid jab, that's information. if you want politics then go to a forum where everyone joins to discuss politics because people living in udon want to hear about udon, not the whining copy paste opinion of someone we have never even herd of. if you don't like Biden that's ok, democrats ok . but why tell us 5-10 times a day ? it's not like your changing anyone's views

David Dickson and Peter Davidson started the hard copy of the Udon Map and Guide very early 2000s. Lee took it over late 2002 early 2003. Dave can't remember if it was him and Peter or Lee who first used the name Udon Map. It was originally a hard copy fold up map of Udon (in English) and a guide to what businesses and services were available at the time.

I joined rather late in 2007 so I wasn't aware of an ethos. However, I did see the opportunities after reading the posts.

I prefer information over commentary. Commentary is cheap. True, useful information is priceless. IMHO

One thing I do remember was that the map never seemed to fold back easily, it had to be folded in a weird sequence to get the folds the right way round.
Was the only usable English language map with the added help that virtually all the farang bars/eateries were marked and had a grid ref to find them.
The map was then a "tool" to help make life easier rather than the advertising platform it has descended to. In the early days you could trust that if an eatery was advertised on the map, it was being recommended because it was a good eatery, not because they paid for a bigger advert and nobody was allowed an honest comment

The MAP was certainly a boon to find places and even understand the Names of Roads , which were and in some cases still are a complete mystery to me............lol

Thanks Fella's for the candid replies..
yes I see now that in the ' About Us ' section of UM, that the nexus of UM was about Udon and Thailand.
like some of you, a fella was thinking lately that the wheels were beginning to come off somewhat, and we had lost our direction with alot of threads...

It seems the ethos has changed and evolved into something different than it was in the beginning. By the time I joined Beer Monkey, Doc, Ajarn, True Brit, Udorn La and Mortimer seemed to dominate the posts, and it was for the most part about non-Udon topics. It wasn't as politically nasty as it is nowadays although Doc was a bit ornery. Bob Helm, I thought, was an excellent moderator.
