Udon airport operators to change.

Post by tamada » September 15, 2021, 8:30 am

"Three airports currently run by the Department of Airports (DoA) will soon come under the control of Airports of Thailand (AoT) in order to help drive tourism growth, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said on Tuesday.

The ministry has resolved to shift the management of Udon Thani, Krabi and Buri Ram airports to the AoT which can help better expand their capacities to turn them into regional air transport hubs that are well-positioned to handle more tourists. ..."

So UTH may truly become international (again).

Only as I understand iof the RTAF agree with any expansion plans as it might impede their Combat effectiveness

You may think so but I have dealt with Thai military intransience and after talking to a previous director of the Airport , he stated sometimes they were3 bloody awkward.

Pretty sure that UTH's "Combat effectiveness" will get the same consideration the RTAF gave when the government moved all the LCC's back to Don Meuang. As long as they could still play golf and the AoT and commercial operators WERE WILLING TO PAY HUGE RENT AND OTHER CONCESSIONS, they didn't mind a bit.

Note the date, wheels are chugging along slowly
AoT to take control of four airports
Bangkok Post
24 January 2019

The Department of Civil Aviation is out and Airports of Thailand is in, in a management shake-up at four supposedly dismal up-country airports. (File photos)
Four major state-owned airports upcountry are set to be managed by Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) to provide improved but costlier services for airliners and air travelers alike.
Udon Thani and Sakon Nakhon airports in the Northeast, Tak airport in the North and Chumphon in the upper South are expected to have a brighter future when they are run in a more corporate style by the AoT, which is jointly owned by the state and private investors.
AoT is the operator of six airports, including Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang.
"Airlines and passengers are certain to pay more, but they will receive superbly different services," permanent secretary for transport Chaiwat Thongkhamkhun said after a meeting on Wednesday.
"We can't accept the services staying the same."
He did not elaborate on what major upgrades would be added to the four airports but stressed the government's policy to raise standards.
Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Tak and Chumphon airports are currently under the Department of Airports (DoA), which owns 28 airports across country.
Not all of its airports are in profit, however. According to former DoA chief Darun Sangchai, 17 turned a profit between 2009 and 2016 while the total number of passengers jumped 25%.
The DoA used the profits to support airports facing a loss or breaking even.
The DoA first planned to have the AoT manage Udon Thani and Tak airports. It later added Sakon Nakhon and Chumphon to the list.
Udon Thani is among the money-making airports with profits reaching 100 million baht a year, Mr Darun said earlier.
It has the potential to grow further and become a key airport in the region as it is located near Laos, he said.
A Transport Ministry panel has been set up to clear obstacles to the transfer, including staff issues and contracts with lessors of commercial space.
There’s even a reference to this on the AOT WIKI page
AOT had planned to assume management of Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon Airport, Tak, and Chumphon Airport from the Department of Airports in 2019. In August 2019, it announced that its plans had been amended; it would assume control of Udon Thani International Airport, Tak Airport, Buriram Airport, and Krabi International Airport, leaving Sakon Nakhon and Chumphon to the DOA. DOA is resisting the change as Udon Thani and Krabi are its money-making airports; Sakon Nakhon and Chumphon are not.

Certainly a work in progress but I don't think any of the other airports mentioned coshare with the RTAF?

I doubt the DoA, who are as ineffective as the SRT really have a dog in this fight. When the government (and RTAF) says, "We want your trough", that's usually the end of it, no?

If Chitchob (who owns half of Buriram having sold the other half yesterday) says it will happen, he's probably already got the RTAF onside.

Let’s just hope & pray the RTAF combat effectiveness isn’t impeded as previously understood by those in the know (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

Apparently these things take a few years to work out:

Airports of Thailand PCL (AOT) is budgeting 220 billion baht in 2018 for the creation of two new airports and the expansion of four existing airports owned by the Department of Airports. Udon Thani Airport is one of the four slated for expansion and AOT management. AOT intends to build Chiang Mai 2 in Lamphun Province and Phuket Airport 2 in Phang Nga Province. The three other existing airports to be managed by AOT are Chumphon Airport, Sakon Nakhon Airport, and Tak Airport.[6] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udon_Than ... al_Airport

So, going back to the OP, it looks like Chitchob in his position as transport minister had managed to get Buriram into the washing machine as well?
