Passport Renewal

Post by LoneTraveler » July 20, 2020, 1:13 pm

I need to renew passport. Bangkok Embassy states "only by mail" and current passport must be included (no exceptions)

My concern is, what if I am asked for my passport by the "powers that be" while my new passport is being processed? I do have copies but will a copy suffice? Also, there are delays in passport renewals so not sure how long it will take to process beyond the 2 weeks because of Corona 19. Web site cannot pin point date of new passport arrival.

Immigration response ambiguous. Appreciate any one whom has had experience?

As an American, shouldn't his application go to the US Embassy?

For the OP - I have no experience of being without a passport here, but I reckon it is a question of odds.

How long have you been living in Thailand, and in that time - other than a visit to Immigration, or somewhere else (bank etc) that has required your passport as ID - have you been randomly asked to produce your passport?

In my case, never. In your case, you say you have copies, plus a good reason why you don't have the original - which is easily confirmed by the expiry date you can show in the copy.

I agree with Jack. The chances of you being asked to produce your passport are minimal unless you go out socialising in the wee hours regularly and drive home.
And there is supposedly still the "amnesty" till 26 September so even less chance of you being stopped ?
If you have a copy with the visa/passport expiry date you should be fine.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

After reading in a UK newspaper of the horrendous delays in renewing a passport and that is if you are there, I think to start the application at least 9 months before the current passport expires will ensure that I will have a new one in plenty of time . No point in running around like a headless chicken, plan and execute to save the stress, I do not really care if I lose 6 months of the current one either.

If you read the article actually backlog is 126,000, which is still a lot to process

Stan
Reread the article it says
As of 7 July, she said, work was under way on about 126,000 passport applications - 31% higher than at the same period last year. Working on, not backlogged
Further down the article The Minister said "The minister pointed out a further 284,000 applications would "need to be worked through in the coming weeks once initial documentation has been received and allocated"."

So 284,000 plus 126,000 is just over 400,000

just to let you know , decided on using " Thai Visa Express " Pattaya , for NO particular reason they all seemed about the same , i sent all my papers , old passport and payed 10,000 baht for the all in service on Jan 16th , yesterday my new passport was delivered to me , all in all very painless and stress free .
i would recommend Paul at Visa Express to anybody who needs to renew passports .

Key Visa charges 5000 for the same one-stop service. They also claimed to be the only UKPO and VFS officially approved provider of this service. However, I didn't seen that claim on their website recently so maybe caveat emptor.
