With the alcohol ban lifted the carnage has resumed on Thailand’s roads.

The national alcohol ban was lifted in all 76 of Thailand’s provinces, plus Bangkok, last Sunday. The sale and transport of alcohol was banned as part of the national state of emergency in order to stop people drinking and socialising during the Covid-19 crisis.

A predictable, and welcome, side effect of the ban was a significant drop in the number of road deaths, since many, if not most of Thailand’s fatal traffic incidents, involve drink driving, particularly during holidays.

Now, after about three weeks, the ban has been lifted. Unsurprisingly, there has been a massive jump in the number of road deaths, rising yesterday to 63, 8 more people than the total number of people that have died from the coronavirus since the outbreak started in Thailand in late January.

Thailand’s roads are notoriously dangerous and are among the deadliest in the world, ranked 9th by the World Health Organisation with an average of 22,000 deaths per year and over 1 million people injured. In 2019, the majority of traffic-related deaths and injuries were motorcyclists, who accounted for 92% of fatal crashes. Specifically, younger male motorcyclists who were driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

The government has set a goal of limiting road deaths to 664 per year, a figure which has already been surpassed by nearly one third this year, as the figure stands at 872 today.

You can ban g this particular drum as often as you like. Each and every day Motorists and Motorbike riders of all Nationalities ignore the situation believing it will not happen to them , I have noticed more so here by all Thais and Foreigners alike, although I have seen a reduction in Foreigners driving while drunkl, although many still believe the one or two small ones they have are okay .
Here until the Government coupled with the Insurance Companies including the Statutory one start flexing their muscles and denying any payment to drunk drivers will it ever change.

Maybe it had to do with the 5 day Holiday the government allowed.
Exactly the same as Songkran.
Yes it has to do with drinking BUT look at the amount of people who have traveled over this holiday and the traffic jams coming from Bangkok and Chonburi.
What did they expect.
Everyone to come home and not drink and drive TIT.
There are 3 times more cars on the road
.

The only way you will cut down on the deaths from Traffic accidents is to Implement a proper driving test and get the police to enforce the Traffic laws.
That will never happen in our lifetime.

OMG another one asking for exact ANSWERS, pure observation dear boy, been here long enough to know those who do and those who do not and the numbers of those who do have diminished .
What do you means stats sent to my house, which cloud cuckoo land are you in. I make an observation and you are asking for accuracy. I learnt to observe and look and after over 30 years policing I think I am expert enough to offer a reasonable guess. What is your excuse for asking a silly question .

For those (including me) who haven't heard this expression before:
Cockwomble
(noun) A person, usually male, prone to making outrageously stupid statements and/or inappropriate behaviour while generally having a very high opinion of their own wisdom and importance.
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define. ... Cockwomble
Is it true you found it appended to the bottom of your final school report, KP?

"What is your excuse for asking a silly question ."
I only ask silly questions when given silly answers as yours are, not all the time. But when you bring out this I was a Cop for 30 years it usually presents "silly answers"
As a Cop you would or atleast should provide an Accurate response. If you were on the stand and presented a "I think", "maybe" or "it was kind of" I would suspect a Lawyer would chew you up and spit you out in any line of questioning. A "resonable guess" as you call it aint good enough in the field you say you practiced. Police Officers present FACTS and for sure not feelings , or guesses.
I have no excuse when it comes to this as I dont need one

Ah I see now a go at KP, be vary careful my friends, I too can write and think and berate as good as the next man. However as NO Men are on here with exceptions maybe I will not bother in dealing with children whose only aim is to attack rather than present a reasoned argument , there are exceptions of course.

With all this tinted glass, closing speeds at around 120 kph and most drunk drivers being behind the wheel after the sun has set (and you probably at home getting ready for bed), how are you actually observing this reduced farang quotient?

No cockwombling now and no precise numbers required. Only the facts on how you do it.

If you dont want people to have a go at KP then, stop putting out statements such as

"although I have seen a reduction in Foreigners driving while drunk"
without something to back it up.
And I certainly agree that by putting childish comments as such one cannot have an adult conversation

Back on topic .. holiday traffic easing twill be interesting to see how the road carnage numbers stack up with regard to the SUPPOSED essential travel only advisory thats obviously being ignored by all Thai and Expat (Tam)

I am perfectly entitled to my opinion as you are yours, but I do not pour scorn on what you write, but that can change . ….. possibly depending on what you say.
