Birds of Udon
Birds of Udon
Back in the days when we first moved to our home in the countryside, there were few birds. Villagers pretty much decimated the population.....stringing 15'+ nets of fine fishing line across tall poles and snaring even the smallest birds. Those days seem to be past, at least in our village. As a result, over the past 15 years or so, the bird population has steadily returned. We're well into counting 25+ variety of birds that we see on a recurring basis. The most recent is the Asian open bill......with a wingspan of 1.5 meters. We see them nearly every day either in neighboring rice fields or in the reservoir near our property. In the evening, we'll see flocks of them......sometimes 10 or more. With their large wingspan, they're a pretty addition to the landscape.
I wish I could claim the photo as mine, but I took it off of the internet.

Re: Birds of Udon
One thing I miss in Southeast Asia is colourful birds. In Toronto, there are cardinals, jays, finches, orioles, red-winged black birds and robins aplenty. Last Friday there were about 20 Canadian geese milling about the local elementary school feeding on something on the ground.
You only pass through this life once, you don't come back for an encore.

First photo is "our" bird hunting. Finally got frog from left. It is not our, but few years ago it was hurt by car and we took care 2-3 weeks. Now feels that this area is home. Not have any make up and rainy day, so do not judge based on this photo.
Second photo is few days old now and also missing half of the birds. That day we had about 30, now 50+ and soon more. I believe that those are getting some fat here and then move to better area, when it is cold here. I am just waiting how many is need to move. Our time is from 6 AM to 8.30 AM, then gone.
To be honest, I follow more snakes that birds, but so few snakes this year.

You probably don't see many of these birds in/around the city, but just a few km outside the ring road:
green bee catcher, kingfisher, mangrove pita, yellow-breasted finch, white-rumped shama, red-whiskered bulbul, green-billed malkoha, olive-backed sunbird, black-colored starling......among many.
The cloud must have known I was talking about the Asian open-billed stork yesterday.....last night while surfing youtube, this was in my queue.....posted by Khru Ni
