British Embassy in Bangkok Demolished

Post by pal52 » August 14, 2019, 8:22 am

The British Embassy in Bangkok has now been demolished.
The new embassy is in the process of relocating to a “modern office space” in the AIA Sathorn Tower in Bangkok’s central business district, the FCO has confirmed.
Has anyone used or contacted the new Embassy yet.

Sold for 426 million pound?
Do foreign embassies own the land and building for commercial sale.
Did they have to purchase the new land for the new embassy?
The aussies have in recent years moved as well.

I believe there is some form of International Treaty that enables/enabled Embassies to own the land the occupied. The new one is on a floor in a shared office/commercial building. Would doubt that they have bought the land but probably a freehold on the floor they occupy. God knows how Sovereign Territory works with that one. Do they stick the flag out of a window.

Yes, for the most part foreign embassies own the land their embassies are on as well as any other compounds associated with the embassy. For the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok they own the land the Chancery is on and across the street the compound where the old embassy and consular offices are located. They also have a large compound on Radjadamri with warehouses and some high ranking officers housing. The U.S. Ambassador's Residence on Wireless is NOT owned by the U.S. government but is leased from the Thai Government annually.

The British Embassy previously owned the area where the large Embassy Mall is located. That was sold for big cash a few years ago.. Looks like the British Foreign Ministry made some good bucks on the sale.. Their new location seems to be leased office space in a high rise here: https://www.google.com/maps/dir//%E0%B8 ... 13.7201324

I wonder where the iconic statue of Queen Victoria will end up at.

Possibly with her husband outside the Albert Hall in London .

The Queen Victoria statue will become a major attraction and retail theme in the shopping mall.
The War Memorial, another British Embassy landmark that also dates back to 1923, will find a new home at the British Club.

Traded in their embassy for a nondescript floor of cubicles in a Sathorn slum. Sounds about right.

I realise it takes a modicum of intelligence to realise when someone is having a laugh.(Thanks for the PM) but not to be deterred. According to newapaper reports from the UK it is staying on site having been bought by the developers as it is believed by the locals to bring them luck and is often the scene of worshippers at times of marriage etc, virtually reducing the 100 year old memorial to a Queen, to no more than another talisman to the Thai superstitions .Disgusting, whats next, the Crown jewels up for auction .
I did offer to buy it , thinking it would add a touch of savoir flair tio the Grumpy mansion, as per pic but my offer was turned down .
