US IRS Tax ID Number

Post by Udonhoward » July 29, 2018, 12:10 pm

I have to renew my wife's tax id number for the US IRS. According to the documentation, I can include a certified copy of either her passport or her Thailand ID card. But, they must be certified by the issuing agency. Has anyone done this, and can tell me where to get either one done? (This wasn't necessary when I first applied for her ID number years ago.).

I have had no end of problems with my wife's TIN. At this point, I have just given up. They insisted that I needed a copy of her birth certificate. She doesn't have one. They had a copy of her passport and ID card. I view the IRS as extremely incompetent. The last email from them informed me that they were very busy and needed another 60 days to answer. They have given that same answer four times.

I got my wife's with no problem, ten years ago. I never could get one for my son, however. I too eventually gave up trying.

To renew your wife's ITIN, you will either need to send in the actual documents to the IRS (Austin, TX) or you may go to a
Certified Acceptance Agent. There are currently three CAAs in Thailand. They are:

Yannawa
Bangkok 10120
Thailand
095-050-5984
DNA Business Services LLC

d/b/a And Business Services 14-287 Village-5,Phan Thai Norasing

I wouldn't trust them with the originals. But, this isn't real convenient. Typical IRS. Thanks for your help.

I have just learned that the US Embassy in Bangkok is now beginning to offer to certify foreign passports for use in the renewal of the ITIN. There is developing a huge demand for certification services now that ITINs need to be renewed every five years. Before you only had to renew an ITIN if it had not been used on a tax return for five years.

Not sure what the cost is or whether it will be offered through the Outreach program.

Anyone had to renew their wife's ITIN lately? I have been informed my wife has to do this. We have to complete a W-7 form and send it to the US with a certified copy of her passport.

Just quick question, why must you renew the ITIN?

If the US Embassy is "certifying" Thai passports for ITIN renewal that sounds like they're notarizing it. That'll be $50 please...
