Plant Identification. Please

Post by the-monk » June 27, 2017, 7:54 pm

We were given this plant.. We like it a lot, so easy to propagate that we now enjoy four of them. They keep blooming non-stop , they have dark green elongated pointed leaves.
Very common in Udon, yet around here no one can come up with a name. We need the English-Botanical-Thai names, should you know the Thai name could you please provide the Thai script. Posters please . Thanks in advance.

Not sure if the Thai's have their own name for them, but เม็กซิกัน พิทูเนีย is the Thai script for Mexican Petunia

Good day GMT42..

According to my Thai it s not the plant for making the blue tea. You are looking for a vine which has either white or blue flowers. I have seen my friend eating these flowers but never making tea. My friend says it s pronounced AN CHAN.. The plant name: Clitoria tematea.. see :: https://th.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8% ... 1%E0%B8%99

Also known as wild petunias, Ruellia squarrosa
Super easy to grow.......break off a stem, stick it in moist soil, it'll grow.

Another, non-related, purple flower that'll bloom most all year long is an individual's mantle (Thunbergia erecta). I took a photo of one of the flowers not long ago.....then a close up

Thanks Mr Parrot... The same approach works well with the Mexican Petunia. Super Super easy. Would you happen to know the Thai names for the Ruellia squarrosa and the Thunbergia erecta?
Have a nice safe day.

I'm definitely no green thumb or a avid gardener but always interested in plants , vege's, garden products, garden machinery ( especially battery chainsaws  ) , grass, health benefits from different species and actually any landscape issues and where to buy.

Might I suggest to the Admin that a new designated section on the forums be allocated to landscape and gardening etc.

Sure there are garden buffs that can share many ideas for growing in UT.
Just a thought.

I contacted Paul on this new thread idea a while ago, and he said it sounded ok, but I think he might have meant just add it to UM Headings now, rather than a new dedicated Thread heading - Gardening in Thailand eg

A local gardening section, involving local advisors would be more than welcome.

Has anyone see Day Lilies? Like the yellow ones, Stella, and the red ones?

I don't know if they qualify as day lilies, but ดอกสีทิด dawk see tit come in a variety of colors and pretty much bloom every year. I think they're more of a dry (dryer) season flower. You often see them in front of people's homes, especially along the highways. We've had pink and orange ones in the yard.

What should we plant in June?
Do we plant it in the shade, or does it like lots of sunshine?
Questions like these, as pertaining to Udon in particular would be wonderful, if they could receive positive feedback.
I try and I fail so many times because of my lack of knowledge.
I need help to be a better gardener.

If you are talking about stella de oro ( pic below ) i have seen them at the Thung sri Muang fair 2 years ago
( held in dec) also at the Khon Kaen Agricultural fair, usually in January.. They sold for 40-50 B a large pot, we bought red ones and the ones similar to Mr Parrot s picture.

Thanks Monk. I haven't been to the KK Fair. It's on my list. Thung sri Muang was a bit downsized this year because of the passing of an individual. Only about half the flower vendors. I have the pink ones like parrot.
Regards

KK Fair is a must for any avid gardener in Issan.

For me, the orchids are a standout. Lots from Lao, Myanmar and rain forrest varieties.

Weekdays for me, as the weekends can attract 1000's
