Clinics and Hospitals
Clinics and Hospitals
Most anyone who's been here for a while knows there's a big difference in the prices charged at clinics versus hospitals. I've had treatments done at a clinic that usually cost well less than 500 Baht, but the same treatment would cost 2000+ at one of the private hospitals.
So today, faced with a lingering throat infection and malaise, I tossed up the choice of a clinic or a hospital. I'm not a fan of antibiotics......unless necessary.....and I knew that the chances of getting a handful of them at a clinic was almost guaranteed. I chose the hospital route....Bangkok Hospital, Dr Laddawan. First a blood pressure check (not normally done in clinics), temp check, then Dr Ladddawan checked my ears, throat, glands, heart, and eyes. She then recommended blood work to rule out a more serious problem. She showed me the prices for each of the suggested blood tests and discussed why she was recommending each. My choice. She had my blood work results from a physical in October available on her computer to compare with today's results.
When it came time to suggest medications (no antibiotics necessary), she suggested several and asked it I wanted them from the hospital.....again, my choice.
My own experience is that there's a time and place that's appropriate for a visit to a clinic and another for a hospital. Sort of like street food and restaurant food. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Re: Clinics and Hospitals
It s good to have such a choice in Udon Thani, some out back places don't have that without travelling some distance.
Choice is the word here and that would include having the choice to insure or not insure for a service.
You did not mention the other and 3rd choice for medical advice and treatment......just go straight to the Pharmacy and get any drug they think will cure you.

That they will! The problem is they'll give you antibiotics for an ingrown hair.

Every time Mrs Pan comes back from the local quacks, she seems to have had "injection in my bottom". Headache, stomach ache, period pains, whatever, the Doc seems to want to stick a needle in her backside. Its not a bad derriere so, maybe he is just a perv!!

Depending on the symptoms I always use Dr Google first. The pharmacy is also a good place for advice .
Next the army hospital as it's much cheaper than the clinics.
then bkk hospital

Its normally Vitamin K or just Normal Saline.
Placebo effect only, to be honest its piss poor clinical practice, but the hypochondriacs here in Asia , love it

The Clinic , when was the last time they calibrated their BP unit ( Sphygmomanometer ) critical if your being reviewed for hypertension and medications are being reviewed as a result of an incorrect reading.
Clinics for Cardiac reviews - do they have an AED ? / Portable O2 available ?
Clinics offering desensitisation - what resus equipment do they have if the pt has an analphylactic reaction
You would be suprised ( sadly ) the lack of resus knowledge / equipment available in many clinics ( based on my experience in Khon Kaen, when ambulances are called to transport F ups.

I understand that when my "in-laws" in Laos (baaan nok) or anybody they know there, go to see a Dr., they all too frequently get given injections. I've often wondered what they are given and why. Is that what it will likely be then, - Vitamin K?wazza wrote:Its normally Vitamin K or just Normal Saline.
