At 5:30 in the morning its more likely to be a coffee and a Mini Mars than a mini marathon

Excuse my rose-colored glasses......I took my godson, visiting from Sicily, to Nongprajak for a long walk today. Although I spotted a few dead fish in the water, the walking/biking paths were in excellent condition, the park was very clean, and the trees planted so many years ago have come in well. Maybe it's because we moved here when the park wasn't anything close to a park, but today, it's very well maintained and a nice city landmark. An added benefit is the park offers lots of shaded areas for families visiting patients in the city hospital.

and a bandstand for political rallies or concerts. Seriously, 49 years ago it was just a jutting piece of land on the hospital side with dirt roads. The "lake" was essentialy a lake/swamp/wetland. Can't complain these days, it is indeed a nice park with great paths around it with coffee shops, a few restaurants and well shaded. Picture taken from the northeast corner of the lake/swamp around mid 1974.

That's a great photo of the swamp....back then. About the only improvement by 1996 was it was dug out....but no trees/palms/landscaping/walking/jogging paths/coffee shops.

If you travel to Carlsbad, New Mexico you will discover lots of interesting wildlife including tons of bats.

Carlsbad is a city in southeast New Mexico. It’s known as a gateway to the vast, bat-filled caves of Carlsbad Caverns National Park. North of the park, trails surround towering Sitting Bull Falls. Downtown, Lake Carlsbad Beach Park has picnic and swimming areas, plus an adjacent water park. Living Desert Zoo & Gardens has mountain lions, bison and native plants. Northwest, Brantley Lake is full of catfish and bass. ― Google

Somewhere I have a photo of Loy Kratung at Nongprajak, I believe 2007. I don't remember if there was an associated day of significance, but the goal was for 3000 lanterns to be floated at 8PM. It was a sight to be seen.....they obviously didn't all go up at the same time, but close enough to light up the sky and take to the calm winds. I think there was a beauty contest on a stage set up in front of the fire department. We were at some distance, but I remarked to my wife about the looks of one of the contestants. She laughed and said the beauty contest wasn't for females. t.i.t.

In Khon Kaen, the kratongs weren't going anywhere owing to the lack of wind.

In my days as a "business owner" over here, I was asked to perform on stage at a local function. It was suggested that I performed a dance routine with some of the female staff with me in drag.

On the night, it transpired that there was a beauty contest on as part of the same function. Backstage, I was in my element until someone pointed out that it was a katoey beauty contest.

The best part was when one of the organisers tried to usher me onstage as part of the beauty pageant. I had to point out that, despite my make up and party frock, I stood no chance against some of the real "beauties". The photos still give my family back home nightmares.
