Enjoyed the old pictures of Udon, asked the T-wife if she remembered them.
Said that they were before she was born

Re: Old photos of Udon Thani
Do not worry much about the headings, their pretty cryptic. The last 2, first is taken from top of 'President' hotel towards clock roundabout. last is just 'flood in north'. before anyone wonders where i got the thai language skills, ...... Google translate. Sort of works sometimes. try it

Re: Old photos of Udon Thani
I had one when i was 12, blue with white roof, it was a 1200 Super, i raced it around the fields until the rear springs came up through the floor...luckly no one was sitting in the back seat... great days.

I came across this site today.......some of the old GI timers might be interested:
A tip of the hat to John Stewart and Phil Nickell for the photos of Udon (and other locations in Thailand) from back in the early 1970's....at
http://pantip.com/topic/33946400
The third photo down is taken on Makkaeng Rd, with what was the Chaiyaporn Hotel on the left side. Notice the dearth of phone lines! I've always wondered whether it's a rule/law/custom that samlaw drivers must wear shorts.
The fourth photo is of Makkaeng Rd, taken from near the corner of Srisuk and Makkaeng. It shows a seed/gardening supply store. I believe the same store remains......don't know if same family, but wouldn't doubt it.
In photo 7....view behind the theater: my first bungalow in Thailand in 1971 was in Nakhon Phanom (NKP).....and was similar to the wood bungalows in that photo. We had one of those same rainy season gangplanks....only wide enough for one person to comfortably walk, but often you had to accommodate someone coming the opposite direction. My rent was 150 baht per month, about $7.50.
In photo 10......the watch repairman reading a paper: I'll guess he's in front of Udon Optical, just up from the fountain circle on the way to Makro. The owner told me his shop was open during the GI days.
In photo 11.......kids and a monkey: I don't see a pair of shoes/sandals on any of the kids.
In photo 12....local bus: It's a BanJan-NaKa bus.....I would not be surprised if that very same bus is making the very same runs today.
In photo 14....school function of some kind: Ah, the days when red shirts and yellow shirts lived together in harmony!
In photo 17.......what ever happened to the pressed squid vendors? The fruit vendors (photo 16) are still out in force......but I haven't seen a pressed squid vendor in years.

They're present often at Morlam concerts. The aroma lingers!

The Chaiyporn hotel has reincarnated to the Much Chemanta Boutique hotel, it was where I stayed in the early 90's whenever I visited Udon. On the lobby walls hung paintings and photos of US fighter aircraft from the Vietnam war period. Also, the roof top floor was accessible and looked as if at one time it was a roof top bar. Probably hosted many a GI party. The third photo down is taken on Makkaeng Rd, with what was the Chaiyaporn Hotel on the left side.
Still around, one occasionally comes through our neighborhood and see one often at UD Town.In photo 17.......what ever happened to the pressed squid vendors? The fruit vendors (photo 16) are still out in force......but I haven't seen a pressed squid vendor in years.

Great Pictures. Thanks for sharing.I often think of all the forgotten pictures, sitting in a box or an attic, taken by the many servicemen stationed in Thailand during Vietnam war.A forgotten treasure trove for those of us that love old pictures.

The photo titled "Traffic Ticket in Progress" is the exact same place that OT's son got a ticket just yesterday and I'm not joking at all. Talk about coincidence. I know that it was exactly the same place because he was following me when he got pulled over by the BIB.
1973 - OT's TW wasn't even born then. Some of the shots of the manual samlors parked together take OT back to around 15 years ago when I first arrived in Udon Thani and it was back then still a common sight.

"GI's walking the streets of Udorn

Obviously, no boyscouts in those times.
Please wear suitable clothing when attending a concert in Udon Thani. Slacks and short-sleeved shirts are ok, shorts, tank tops or muscle shirts are not.
