Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

Okay, so after completing the lion's share of work on the house, Mak's crew took two days to build the roof over my storage containers. Labor was 3500 baht. I designed it so that when I want to move the containers, they can be pulled forward using straps without hitting any of the iron. I'll place t...

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

1. I would suggest using low-profile (flat) trunking. It has the advantages of being painted over with the wall paint making it almost invisible, as well as giving easy access if needed later (rather than chasing in under render). 2. Any cabling in the ceiling (or any loose horizontal cable) should...

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

yup, that was one thing that miffed me, was the ugly electric cable or plastic casing running down the middle of the walls..real eye sore..so I make them put the cables or plastic boxes down the corners or tuck them down beside the concrete pillars, ans then paint the same color as the wall behind....

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

Some of the numbers in the "budget breakdown" don't add up. Whole thing is a bit of a "ball park" arrangement I guess. Yes, my wife said the same thing. For instance, the cost for electrical materials is 9000 baht, but apparently labor for the electrical is mixed in with labor for the drop-down cei...

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

FYI, the Thai man who built this house for a claimed 230,000 baht got a lot of interest from other Thais online. 14.jpg 9.jpg He has been open in saying he did a lot of the work himself, and that the cost of materials varies. So he says there is no guarantee anyone else could build it for the same c...

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

So here are some photos of the house as of about three or four weeks ago. Rendering finished, plumbing finished, doors hung. Yes, I told my wife to make sure to tell her uncle Mak to use only green PP-R water pipe, but of course, they didn't. I can only shake my head. The house is solid, but sloppil...

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

Okay, so here are some photos of the build as of late December, 2018--so about six weeks ago. Here's the south side of the house. Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

All of this input re rainwater collection and water tank systems is terrific. It's the kind of information-sharing that makes UM so valuable. As for my humble build for the in-laws, I'm already over-budget. The water pressure from the village system is very strong and my wife's family will be paying...

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

Good point about dirt from the roof in rainwater. I drank a lot of rain water in Central America when I stayed in the Keyes and it was great. The trick is to collect it in at least a semi-sanitized way if you want to drink it. Once in awhile, my kids will put a bowl outside during heavy downpours.....

You may want to consider Belize. English spoken by almost everyone. Belize City was a dump when I was there, but I really liked it inland, say San Ignacio. A lot of variety for such a small country

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

Wondering why most builds I see do not include guttering on the house running to water tanks. Many reasons to support such a thing and few against as far as I can see. I think a PhD dissertation could be written on the subject of "Changing Usage of Cisterns in Thai Villages." Be interesting to get ...

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

Thanx Matey, yup well it was not much extra moola to extend the roof over the carport, and concrete the floor..now just needs walls in the future, and the carport becomes another room..I like plenty of concrete outside so you have options to work on, cook outside, entertain, etc etc..and it keeps t...

Re: aluminium strip and angle

Jerome, I didn't buy aluminum from them, but the safety glass for a table top I got from them was delivered to my house and it was two CM too wide. They said it was done in Bangkok and can't cut again or glass will break, sorry. Not too happy dealing with them, although a lot of guys have had good ...

Looks like you got your money's worth to me. Congrats on building such a swank man cave--I should be so lucky to have one. Smart move to leave the one bay open as a carport, LOL!

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

Okay, it was now sometime in early to mid-December 2018, and issues with the build had settled down. The workers showed up every day and worked hard. The only thing that bugged me was that at the end of the day I'd ask what they needed for tomorrow, so I could buy it on my way home. Many times they ...

Granite can be so beautiful, but I've read that you must seal the countertops once a year. Is that a big deal, or not?

Re: Low Budget Village Build For In-Laws

Thanks to all of you for your comments. I have to go back to China for awhile and won't take my laptop there, so I'll try to get further along in the story before I leave. The construction learning curve has been steep. I read a lot of the building threads and took notes, and did Internet research, ...
