Re: Quintessentially Isaan (Photos)

When I encountered this truck yesterday, a few memories: Of the time in Taiwan, 5AM-ish, on the way to work in an AF bus, a motorcycle passed by with a naked body slung across the back. I was too shocked to say anything and only realized some time later that the body was a pig on the way to the mark...

Re: learning the thai language

My wife grew up in a setting not far from Little House on the Prairie. I asked her if she was more like Mary or Nelly. She said....."Nelly.....half of her". As she grew up without a TV or radio, the kids got their stories from the elders.....mostly in the form of tales/นีทาน. Hardly a week will pass...

Re: Time Requirement, Post Extension, for 800K in Bank

Walked into immigration at 1:38 today......looked to be several people ahead of us, but within a 5 minutes of sitting down, we were called up. The captain (closest to 90 day desk) flashed through our paperwork and told us, you must keep 800k in your account for 3 months after you renew. Ok, ok.........

Re: Birds of Udon

You probably don't see many of these birds in/around the city, but just a few km outside the ring road: green bee catcher, kingfisher, mangrove pita, yellow-breasted finch, white-rumped shama, red-whiskered bulbul, green-billed malkoha, olive-backed sunbird, black-colored starling......among many. T...

@parrot Just a little mistake: น้ำดื่ม not น้ำตื่ม dodek instead totao Thanks. I got the tone right. Speaking of ด and ต. I had a wonderful Thai teacher who patiently taught me tones and pronunciation. But no matter how hard I'd practice, I couldn't get the sound just right between the two. It's in...

Birds of Udon

Back in the days when we first moved to our home in the countryside, there were few birds. Villagers pretty much decimated the population.....stringing 15'+ nets of fine fishing line across tall poles and snaring even the smallest birds. Those days seem to be past, at least in our village. As a resu...

Just as there is no shortage of termites in Thailand, there's an abundance of companies that deal with them. 6 boys, father worked in a factory during the day and bartended or church'd at night. Mother played Ernestine at the phone office on night shift....waiting for Liberace to make a long distance (operator assisted) phone call. The helicopter (parent) wasn't invented yet. 4 of my 5 brothers were into making small bombs. We made our own gunpowder, or emptied shotgun shells and repurposed the powder. Anything that would flash, bang, or boom.....we were interested. Never to damage anything, just stuff to do. We would also stuff match heads into small containers, wrap th...

Re: Rubber tree farm

A cursory look at Thai website offering land with rubber trees shows a pretty good spread between 40,000 and 100,000 Baht per rai. Lots of variables and I'm sure the prices go below and above that range depending on location, quality of trees, roads, and tree maturity.
Good luck with your sale

Re: learning the thai language

I may have mentioned this, reason #7822, about learning the tones/sounds of individual letters in words: If you can crack this nut, admittedly not easy but certainly nothing to do with age or hearing, you can expand your knowledge of 'all things Thai' even if your vocabulary or speaking ability suck...

Tops expanded their store.....probably about 30%. The staff is still rearranging items, so it remains to be seen what the final layout will be like. It's as easy as not throwing your Snicker's wrapper or cigarette butt out the car window. It just takes a bit of learning/understanding about where that wrapper goes before you understand. I go to Nongwahsaw market with my wife a few times a week. She does meat and veggies, I do fruit, flowers and i...
