Re: Bank of Thailand Warns of Tourism Meltdown

So far have seen little evidence of an impact on Udon. Maybe more rice planted, that's all i can see. No extra homeless so far, or hoards of unemployed wandering around. Maybe just quietly staying with family. Spent the long weekend in Pattaya. First thing i noticed, while Udon Thani airport was ope...

Re: school fees

St Mary's not quite so bad. They did refund the 'optional' summer school fees for the April-May holiday, and did provide some token online learning for June. They went back at beginning of July, full-time.

Re: England: Ahead or Behind The Curve on Containing the Virus?

Contact tracing in the UK has been royally screwed up. Initially, it was done successfully by NHS at first but they had only a handful of trained staff. Once the outbreak took off they were overloaded, so middle of March the government decided to outsource the contact tracing to a private company (a...

Re: Udon Immigration office lately - 90 second report

Went to do my 90 day report today. Waiting to the end of July with the amnesty maybe not a good idea as could be a bit of a backlog. 2.50 p.m, arrived, only customer, out in 90 seconds!

Re: Bristol, England and its slave trading benefactor

Interesting fact - most of the wealthy 'old' families of the UK made a lot of their money either from Slave trading, slave plantations producing sugar, tobacco or cotton, and opium. Oh, and piracy. When the British decided to do something they usually cornered the market ..... Many of them became ph...

Re: St Mary's school

Yes, my daughter did her first online session today for St Mary's. Mind you i had no idea how it was going to work first thing this morning because there had been practically zero information on how it would be done. Any Information on the St Mary's rather limited website was in Thai, and my wife di...

Re: The source of the coronvirus??

In totalitarian countries officials aren't free to report the truth to their political masters. It can endanger their livelihoods and even their lives if they go off the party line. In the Cold War this was an important advantage that the US had over the Soviet Union. The CIA and other US intellige...

Rain would be nice. Only one day under 40 in the past week, with a maximum of 43 centigrade. Rain? Not enough to even wet the roof.

Re: Udon Immigration office lately

As i understand it, ALL extensions from an OA visa have to have insurance, retired or married. One friend who was on retirement from an original OA was told he needed it. But as he was over 80 with pre-existing conditions, insurance was impossible. Sorry, they said. When prompted again about what he...

I never worked at a place with a free canteen in 35 years, except when working on oil rigs and mining sites - where, of course, the only other option was bush tucker.

My french beans suffer from sudden death syndrome in this heat - i had 10 plants four weeks ago, down to 2 now ...... Tomatoes gave up the ghost 2-3 weeks ago. Lettuce struggling and bitter. I have to water my 2 Avocado trees every day, but one is slowly dying back in the heat (nearly lost that one ...

Re: Weather in Udon ?

My max/min thermometer said 42 centigrade today, worst was that it was still 38 at 5 p.m. That's the highest temperature i have seen for that time of day in Udon. Trying to water my trees (recently planted) at 6 p.m was tough.

Re: The source of the coronvirus??

Apparently France had a case back in 2019, on December 27th. They just found out as they were checking pneumonia swabs from December. The patient had not traveled or had contact with any Chinese person. so transmission was already happening in France in December. As no tests then existed, makes you ...

Wife needed to restock shop. Some horrendous queues (one saw vehicles triple parked opposite St. Mary's, leaving only one lane clear). Couldn't get Lao khao anywhere. Customers are very unhappy - may need to hire some muscle.

Re: The UK has lost its mind.

GT, the UK has done a splendid job. They delayed shutdown just long enough to kill off many of the most vulnerable and costly members of society. As a conservative estimate, that should save us at least half a billion annually. Whilst NZ continues providing pensions, healthcare and benefits to the o...
