Re: Udon Traffic
Easy way to beat those temp checks - especially if just using your hand - liberally spray with sanitiser and rub hands - will lower temperature by about 2 degrees!

Re: Solar/Wind energy for the future. Forget it
As to solar thermal power stations (i.e. using parabolic mirrors) the biggest is in Morocco, and most of the rest are in Spain. Australia only ever had the Port Augusta project, which was cancelled. Their may have been experimental projects, but no commercial ones. Quite a few of these plants have b...

Re: Will Trump concede?
Ironically it is not the votes for Biden which lost Trump the election, but votes for the Libertarian candidate. They got up to 2% of the vote in some states, due to Republicans voting for them because of Trump's abrasive style. At least 3 marginal states would have gone Trump's way instead of Democ...

Re: Solar/Wind energy for the future. Forget it
In the UK they are building a 50 MW liquid air power station to store excess wind energy - it will liquidise air under pressure, and when demand rises release the air through turbines to generate electricity. Emission free and no issue of batteries requiring scarce minerals or needing replacement. B...

Re: Nicest place to stay in Udon these days
There are twice as many options compared to 10 years ago. About 5 on soi Sampanit, and just as many around the Nutty park area. All an easy walk from Udon Thani station. Going further afield many more. Also some bargains to be had. Just checked on Agoda, and Prajaktra reduced from 2,000 baht to 659 ...

Re: The dreaded virus........
Well considering there's about a million deaths and less than 10 million infections out of a population of nearly 8 billion you'll find the odds of knowing someone who has died from the virus are very slim.also sitting in a country with near to nothing infection rate you won't come across many deat...

Re: Bank of Thailand Warns of Tourism Meltdown
So far have seen little evidence of an impact on Udon. Maybe more rice planted, that's all i can see. No extra homeless so far, or hoards of unemployed wandering around. Maybe just quietly staying with family. Spent the long weekend in Pattaya. First thing i noticed, while Udon Thani airport was ope...

Re: school fees
St Mary's not quite so bad. They did refund the 'optional' summer school fees for the April-May holiday, and did provide some token online learning for June. They went back at beginning of July, full-time.

Re: England: Ahead or Behind The Curve on Containing the Virus?
Contact tracing in the UK has been royally screwed up. Initially, it was done successfully by NHS at first but they had only a handful of trained staff. Once the outbreak took off they were overloaded, so middle of March the government decided to outsource the contact tracing to a private company (a...

Re: Bristol, England and its slave trading benefactor
Interesting fact - most of the wealthy 'old' families of the UK made a lot of their money either from Slave trading, slave plantations producing sugar, tobacco or cotton, and opium. Oh, and piracy. When the British decided to do something they usually cornered the market ..... Many of them became ph...

Yes, my daughter did her first online session today for St Mary's. Mind you i had no idea how it was going to work first thing this morning because there had been practically zero information on how it would be done. Any Information on the St Mary's rather limited website was in Thai, and my wife di...

Re: The source of the coronvirus??
In totalitarian countries officials aren't free to report the truth to their political masters. It can endanger their livelihoods and even their lives if they go off the party line. In the Cold War this was an important advantage that the US had over the Soviet Union. The CIA and other US intellige...

Rain would be nice. Only one day under 40 in the past week, with a maximum of 43 centigrade. Rain? Not enough to even wet the roof.
