Copa America 2015

Post by Zidane » June 30, 2015, 9:22 am

Two goals from Eduardo Vargas, who was on loan at QPR for part of last season, was enough to give Chile an entertaining two goals to one victory over Peru in what was one of the better games of the tournament,so far.
Despite being down to 10 men for 70 minutes Peru gave a good account of themselves but the Chileans strength eventually saw them through to the Final.
Chile have never won the tournament in its 99 year history and will face either Argentina or Paraguay who kick off their semi final at 6.30am Thai time tomorrow.

Uruguay looking well set for the Copa America Final with a 2-0 lead over Paraguay after 35 minutes.
More than a passing interest in this game for Manchester United fans with Marcos Rojo scoring the first and his defensive partner,Nicholas Otamendi of Valencia, being rumoured to be the subject of a 22m GBP bid from the Old Trafford club.

Paraguay pulled a goal back before half time but that was as good as it got for them as Argentina ran riot in the second half eventually winning by the huge margin of 6-1.
Two goals from another Manchester Unite player,Angel di Maria, plus one from City's Sergio Aguero meant Manchester based players scored four of Argentina's goals....Uniteds Marcos Rojo got the first.

The Final between Chile and Argentina kicks off at 3am Sunday morning here in Thailand. :(

Its worth remembering that Chiles national football stadium in Santiago was used as a detention centre for a couple of months after the coup of September 1973.
Men and women were interrogated, tortured and murdered and their bodies disposed of at different sites.
Today the stadium has several rows over its original wooden benches, which is fenced off and fans cannot use,to serve as a remembrance for those dark days over 40 years ago......

"After the coup d'état of September 11, 1973 that ousted President Salvador Allende, the national stadium in Santiago began to be used as a detention facility. An article in Harvard Review of Latin America reported that "there were over eighty detention centers in Santiago alone" and gave details of the National Stadium and others.
Over 40,000 people spent time in the compound during the junta regime. Twelve thousand detainees were interned between September 11 and November 7.The field and gallery were used to hold men, while women were held in the swimming pool changing rooms and associated buildings. Locker rooms and corridors were all used as prison facilities while interrogations were carried out in the velodrome. The Red Cross estimated that 7,000 prisoners occupied the stadium at one point, of whom about 300 were foreigners. According to the testimonies of survivors collected by the humanitarian group, detainees were tortured and threatened with death by shooting. Some were shot on the premises and then taken to unknown locations for execution.

FIFA President Sir Stanley Rous insisted the USSR team play a World Cup qualifier at the time. [-X They however refused to do so =D> and Chile qualified automatically for the 1974 World Cup, where they failed to advance from a group containing both West and the East Germany as well as Australia. (Interesting to see FIFA was as out of touch with reality 40 years ago as they are now). =;
The use of the stadium during the coup d'état is depicted in the 2002 documentary film Estadio Nacional, directed and produced by Carmen Luz Parot. The 1982 film Missing by Greek filmmaker Costa-Gavras depicts the September 11, 1973 coup d'état and execution of American journalists Charles Horman and Frank Teruggi at the Estadio Nacional de Chile."

Earlier this morning (Thai time),host nation Chile won the Copa America for the first time in its 99 year history. =D>
In a cagey game of few chances the score at the end of extra time was 0-0.Argentina were very disappointing during the game and wilted even further in the penalty shoot out which they lost 4-1.
So wild celebrations in Santiago for the next few hours.....maybe days.....maybe months !
Earlier Peru got 3rd spot in the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Paraguay.
