Football: The Coldest Weather for a Game

Post by Laan Yaa Mo » March 30, 2015, 1:17 am

For all of you football-starved fans, here is action from the past in which the game between the Calgary Stampeders and the Saskatchewan Roughriders was played in -36 degree F weather in Regina, Saskatchewan. Enjoy.

I thought one of the teams would have been the 'Fudgepackers'. That's not Football - more like Rugby for nancies.

Well, it was -35 F., which makes it difficult to play your best. Furthermore, I doubt many muddied oafs (rugby players) have played in conditions that cold.

I don't know, but I am guessing it is around the same. Oh, I just googled it, and the answer is, -37.7778 C. Remember that was the temperature at the beginning of the game, it got down to -50 F nearing the end of it.

Not me. I watched the game in the warmth of my living room in Toronto. But, the 19,000+ who were present at Taylor Field I am sure were very cold. The announcer at the game suggested they might want to move a bit closer together. 55+

Two years later I spent a winter in Saskatoon, about 4 hours by bus north of Regina. It was the coldest winter of my life. The temperature did not get above zero F. for two straight months, and it was windy every day as there are few trees on the prairies. I only lasted one month working by loading and unloading box cars for the rail company from 10 at night until 6 in the morning.

Yes, it's true. I could not lift anything without assistance whereas the old hands had no problem. I am not cut out for physical work.

Of course it is football with Canadian rules, and it does have a bit of history. The Toronto Argonauts began football operations in 1873, and the Hamilton Tigers in 1869. In contrast the Everton football club with English rules did not get underway until 1878.
