I think its a great idea for a young person to get out of their own culture and see how things work in another part of the world. Has she been studying Japanese language and culture?

I would want to look into what the job is and where she will be staying. I would also want to know if this is a program strictly sponsored by the schools/ministry of education and that some international employment agent wasn't making a profit off her employment.

I'd be interested in hearing more about this. What school is sponsoring this, what's the name of the program? Are you required to pay any up-front fees, travel or living expenses or is everything covered?

ALSO, has she or will she be getting a proper Visa that allows her to work in Japan or a student Visa? Is the school handling the Visa requirements?

You're stark raving mad. Japan is extremely dangerous for Thai women. The stories are horrific.

Yeah, that and just a Japanese company taking advantage of cheap Thai labor is what I would be worried about. But being this is a school sanctioned program and not through a international employment agent it should be all above board.

I would be asking a lot of questions to be sure. Maybe have the wife ask for the name of the company she'll be working at and a contact of someone who has worked there that they can talk to. (If she hasn't already done so).

From the Human Right Watch website:
The strong demand for Thai women's labor in Japan, coupled with restrictive immigration policies, has provided an ideal environment for these networks to flourish. Women who wish to migrate from Thailand to Japan for work are rarely able to make the arrangements themselves and instead rely on intermediaries to obtain the necessary travel papers, negotiate border controls, and arrange their job placement. Research by Human Rights Watch and others indicates that, in most cases, these intermediaries engage in serious human rights abuses, and women who agree to migrate for lucrative employment opportunities find themselves trafficked into compulsory labor.

Trafficking networks use deception, the threat and use of physical force, and other forms of coercion to place women from Thailand into debt bondage employment in Japan. The agents and brokers derive enormous profits by "selling" the women for amounts exponentially greater than the costs they have incurred, and this "price" becomes the basis of a woman's debt, which she must repay through months of grueling unpaid labor. Agents regularly misrepresented the conditions under which women would work upon their arrival in Japan, giving false or misleading information about crucial issues, such as the type of work they would do, the range of choice they would have, the amount of money they would owe, and the amount of money they would earn. Agents failed to explain the legal implications of the women's travel and employment as well as the highly controlled circumstances under which they would be forced to repay their "debt." Furthermore, once a woman agreed to go to Japan, and the agent began to make arrangements, women lost the ability to safely change their decision or negotiate the terms of their agreement.

Flights to Japan on AirAsia are not too expensive. You or your wife may want to go with her initially to check the place out.

I spent 2 to 3 months late last year trying to talk a female Thai employee of mine in NZ out from going to visit a Sri Lankan guy living in Japan. They were having an internet romance.

He said he couldn't get a visa to meet her in Thailand or to come to NZ. Her family in Thailand were also telling her not to go as they thought it was too dangerous. Fortunately she just visited Thailand in her December - January holiday and didn't go on to Japan.

You really need to look into this properly.

Rather than just read the thread, you might suggest she read ฉันคือเอรี่. It's Commanard Book Prize winner in non-fiction.
It's not porn in any sense of the word.....merely a woman's story of her younger years in Japan and Korea. It was the first novel in Thai I was able to read....so if I can read it, a late teen can easily digest it. Se-Ed usually carries the book.

Maybe the best thing to do to calm the nerves would be to talk with a few kids who have 'been there, done that' in Japan under the school/work program.

I'd be very wary of sending a young Thai girl off to Japan.....read the piece below about a similar type scheme.
Written by a Japanese national who lived in Khon Kaen.

Topic: Reality of Thai Girls working in Japan

The reality of Thai girls working in Japan is a little bit different from their dream.
I worked for a project in Sri Lanka for years together with Thai Civil Engineers from Chulalornkorn University.
In Sri Lanka, I realized that the characters of Thai people are quite different from the Japanese.
I’ve come to love their characters and I decided to help Thai people.
The attachment below is to understand the reality of Thai girls working in Japan.
This final suggestion is addressed to the owner of Khonkaen hotel.

Re: Final suggestion with regard to 9 girls for home cares ***.
My final suggestion is to ask Mr.*** to give Thai students training course for
Japanese language, not in Japan but here in Thailand.
This training course will last up to 2 years.
After 2 years, students can have a test for the Japanese language second grade in Bangkok.
Some will pass the test for Japanese language second grade, whereas some will fall the examination.
After passing the examination for Japanese language, students can rather easily visit Japan to take
examination for caring elderly.
Then why Mr.*** is seeking young girls immediately?

I think his intension is to use young girls as untrained (unskilled) laborer.
Many Japanese small-scaled companies are seeking young power from southeastern region of Asia,
just to make use of that young power as untrained (unskilled) laborers, which is illegal in Japan.
For just making profit from young power and the companies do not care much about the job training itself.
If nominated 9 girls have to go to Japan in this April,
We have to check the daily time schedule of the training course.
The following picture is what I have in my mind regarding 9 girls in Japan.
From 8 o’clock in the morning, 9 girls have to work on site.

This is not training course at all any more, but actual caring work for elderly.
This hard work lasts at least until 5 o’clock in the evening.
9 girls are totally exhausted by the ordinary work of the day, and
no power has left to study Japanese language nor skill for caring elderly.

Actually a large number of small-scaled companies are just seeking
money from young power and do not care for job training.
Japanese police is also making investigation for illegal job training by
small-scaled companies in Japan.

Further Ibaraki prefecture is one of the notorious places for prostitutes
by Thai girls working in Thai bars and Thai restaurants.
Our 9 girls will definitely meet Thai prostitutes and they will
become friends in Japan.
Japanese mafia (yakuza) is closely related to nasty business of prostitution.
Japanese mafia (yakuza) will sell Thai girl at a price of 3 million yen to 5 million yen.
Thai girl taken by yakuza group never have a chance to get back home.
She has to be a prostitute until she dies.

If Mr.*** insists to take 9 girls to Japan immediately,
We need to ask him the daily time schedule of the training course.
From what time to what time of the day, 9 girls study Japanese language.
From what time to what time of the day, 9 girls study skill for caring elderly,
except actual care for elderly.
If unfortunately my expectation is quite true, 9 girls have to return Thailand as
soon as possible, because there is no hope for 9 girls’ future, just being used
as untrained (unskilled) laborers to make profit for the company.

I hope you could understand my suggestion and help our 9 nominated girls to Japan.
******* ****** from my home in Khonkaen
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Can't speak for the validity of the info, but:
http://www.jeducation.com/THAI/lifeinja ... ttime.html says: students work no more than 28 hours per week, wages should be 800-1000 yen per hour, the work must not interfere with classes......etc etc etc. I'd guess there's plenty more info available on various Thai blogs about the good/bad of working in Japan as a student.
